Overview Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer – Substations to join our team. The Civil Structural Engineer serves as the civil engineer for electric substation design projects for high-voltage utility systems and renewable energy interconnection projects. He/she will apply NESC, ASCE, and other applicable codes and standards in the engineering design and will independently produce steel structure designs and concrete foundation designs associated with rigid and strain bus configurations, foundation layouts, oil containment designs, metal grate platform designs, and fire wall designs. He/she will assist the lead substation engineer with the creation of the general arrangement and conduit and grounding plans as well as review site plans for correctness prior to submission to local/federal authorities for permit approval. This would require an understanding of standard practices for erosion and sediment control as well as stormwater management. He/she will also work with other internal and external project stakeholders to ensure project milestones and expectations of contracted services are met. Westwood has a highly experienced and dynamic team of individuals dedicated to providing high-level professional services to our clients.

Duties And Responsibilities

Perform all aspects of civil design for high voltage (4kV – 230kV) and EHV (above 230kV) substation projects to include:

Development of steel structure designs and fabrication drawings

Concrete foundation designs and detail drawings

Oil containment designs and detail drawings

Metal grate platform designs and detail drawings

Fire wall designs and detail drawings

Structural analysis

Documentation for design calculations

Foundation layout plans

Associated bill of materials

Assistance with general arrangement development, cable trough and conduit plans and details, grounding plans and details, site plan development, erosion and sediment control review, stormwater management review, construction documentation (sequence and RFP)

Technical support (bus fault stress analysis, procurement, construction)

Active coordination with physical designer and other project team members to develop drawings and coordinate efforts with other disciplines such as substation engineers, transmission line engineers, distribution line engineers, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors

Other expectations: focus on high quality work, fast paced environment, client interests communication, technical specialist for system protection and communication, remove impediments, advise management on ROI, attend client technical review meetings

Required Experience

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited program

Minimum 4 years related work experience in high voltage civil substation design

PE license in at least one US state

Proficient in the use of AutoCAD or Bentley MicroStation

Proficient in 3D modeling (AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation V8i)

Proficient in the use of PLSCAD, LPILE, STAAD, or similar programs

Good knowledge of industry and technology trends specific to substations

Strong familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code

Preferred Experience

Meet all minimum qualifications

Knowledge of construction practices and constructability

Experience with proposal writing and project estimating

Working knowledge of scheduling and project controls processes
