Controller – Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Backcountry Hunters & Anglers seeks a controller who will lead all day‑to‑day finance operations, including functional responsibility for accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and grants administration. The controller will work closely with staff and board members to ensure effective program implementation and maintain error‑free audits.

Primary Responsibilities

Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems to ensure compliance with GAAP, standards, and regulatory requirements.

Maintain internal controls and safeguards for revenue collection, program budgeting, and actual expenditures.

Coordinate audit activities and manage compliance with state and federal regulations, corporate insurance, contracts, and legal inquiries.

Analyze financial data and present accurate, timely financial reports to executive leadership, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements.

Ensure expenditures align with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period and collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.

Manage organizational cash‑flow forecasting in partnership with senior staff and the President & CEO.

Track the performance of invested assets in accordance with investment policies and guidelines.

Complete monthly reconciliations (accounts receivable, accounts payable, prepaid expenses, G/L entries, etc.) as required.

Provide leadership, relationship building, and program development skills to strengthen finance operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in accounting; CPA certification required.

Master’s degree in business administration with a focus in accounting or finance preferred.

Knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, auditing, fiscal management, automated accounting systems, and data processing.

Proven ability to apply accounting and auditing techniques, prepare clear concise reports, and manage concurrent assignments while meeting deadlines.

Strong work ethic, commitment to accuracy, and a team‑player attitude.

Experience coordinating audit activities and managing budgeting, reporting, and analysis for grants.

Experience with grants management and compliance reporting for government, corporate, and foundation grants.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including presenting key data to senior management, the board, and external partners.

Professional record of leadership, relationship building, and program implementation.

Willingness to work flexible hours and to lift up to 25 pounds.

Valid driver’s license.

Preference given to candidates who are hunters and/or anglers.

Additional Details Starting Salary:

Dependent on experience.

Location:

Missoula, Montana (remote considered for preferred candidates).
