Part Time Family Support Specialist New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an award‑winning not‑for‑profit agency dedicated to serving children and families with medical complexities, chronic illnesses, and disabilities throughout the five boroughs. NAC is currently seeking a Family Support Specialist to join its Family Support Service Department.

Position Type: Part Time

Salary Range: $24,000 - $26,000

Location: 825 7th Avenue, New York, NY 10019

Department: Family Support Services and Recreation

Responsibilities

Report to office to support the Family Support Department with all daily tasks.

Appropriately and consistently document and otherwise communicate feedback regarding family visits and recreation activities.

Assist recreation staff with overseeing trips, groups, and special events.

Support all in‑office requests, including organization and data collection of donations (clothing and toy drives), and support NAC’s food pantry.

Act as a chaperone on NAC vans for transportation to and from client’s home.

Assist in managing children with difficult behaviors (including individuals with autism) and related activities.

Perform other duties in accordance with agency needs.

Required Education And Experience

College level coursework in Psychology, Social Work, Education, Human Services or other related field preferred. High school diploma required.

1 year of experience planning and implementing direct support services to children or families, preferably those experiencing disabilities or medical fragility.

Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule based on individual client and family needs. Some later evenings and at least once a month Saturdays are required.

Familiarity with New York City and the diverse recreational opportunities that exist here.

Experience working with multidisciplinary staff and programs is a plus.

CPR/first aid and mandatory reporter training required prior to or immediately following employment.

Familiarity with event planning is a plus.

Must be computer literate, have good organizational skills, and the ability to multi‑task.

Must be detail oriented and have pleasant phone manner.

Required Skills

Able to work with a team and/or independently; works well under pressure; legible handwriting; and excellent organization, problem‑solving and communication skills.

Able to follow written and oral instructions effectively and communicate within a team setting.

Must have experience working with children – ideally experience with children with disabilities or medical conditions and their families. Prior experience working with children in the child welfare system is helpful.

Individuals with interest in servicing clients in the social services industry, clients in low SES and a passion to serve kids.

Able to lift items or equipment that can weigh up to 20 pounds.

Light lifting is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly.

Must be able to work late afternoons/evenings and some Saturdays.

Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodation.

Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
