The Digital Modernization Sector at Leidos is seeking a dynamic
Senior Database Engineer
to support cloud modernization initiatives for the
United States Coast Guard (USCG)
at Command, Control, Communication, Computer, Cyber, and Intelligence Service Center (C5ISC) in the
Alexandria, VA
area. This role is part of a high-impact program focused on delivering secure, scalable cloud solutions that enable operational agility and resilience across the USCG enterprise. This role requires deep technical expertise, strategic vision, and the ability to mentor junior engineers while driving innovation in data architecture and operations. This role is essential to maintain operational integrity, security compliance, and performance across hybrid cloud deployments. You’ll work closely with cloud engineers, cybersecurity analysts, and program leadership to drive continuous improvement and deliver value to the mission. Key Responsibilities
Provide direct troubleshooting and resolution for complex database issues in production and development environments. Lead the design of scalable, secure, and highly available database solutions across AWS and Azure. Drive advanced query optimization, indexing strategies, and workload tuning to ensure peak performance. Define and implement best practices for multi-cloud database deployments, migrations, and integrations. Establish enterprise-level database security, compliance frameworks, and audit processes. Architect robust backup, recovery, and high-availability solutions across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. Champion automation of database provisioning, monitoring, and scaling using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, and CI/CD pipelines. Define and enforce database standards, policies, and documentation for enterprise consistency. Work closely with developers, network engineers, and security teams to support cloud-based applications and services. Support cross-functional coordination across engineering, cybersecurity, and program management teams. Promote continuous improvement through feedback loops and process refinement. Ensure alignment with USCG mission priorities and Leidos delivery standards. Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Information Systems, Business). 8+ years of experience in cloud infrastructure engineering. Expert-level proficiency with SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and cloud-native databases. Hands-on experience with AWS RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB and Azure SQL Database, Cosmos DB. Proven experience in multi-cloud architectures, networking, and advanced security practices. Strong background in performance tuning, query optimization, and large-scale data management. Demonstrated success in cloud migrations, hybrid integrations, and enterprise-scale deployments. Proficiency with automation frameworks (Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, ARM templates). Excellent facilitation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. Certifications such as AWS Certified Database Specialty, Azure Database Administrator Associate, or CompTIA Security+. Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain a Public Trust and DoD Secret Clearance. Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience supporting DHS, USCG, or other federal cloud modernization efforts. Experience with NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra) and emerging cloud-native data services. Familiarity with containerized workloads (Docker, Kubernetes) and database orchestration. Knowledge of data warehousing, analytics platforms, and BI integration. Strong documentation and cross-functional collaboration skills. Experience working with technical teams in cloud, cybersecurity, or enterprise IT environments. Come break things (in a good way).
