Job Appointment:

The casual Community Service Aide II positions are limited to maximum of 1,400 hours worked in a calendar year.

Work Schedule:

Mon-Fri. 25-30 hours per week with some weekend or evenings required with advance notice. Alternate schedule may be available after hire.

Position Summary The Portland Bureau of Transportation’s Mobility and Safety Programs Division is seeking two new team members to support our Safe System and Education & Encouragement teams. These two CSA positions are for professionals looking to broaden their communications, customer service, outreach, and event skills while gaining experience working in the public sector. Interviews for both positions will be combined, and applicants can express interest in one or both positions.

Education & Encouragement CSA II The Education & Encouragement CSA II will provide outreach, customer service, and event support for programs that encourage Portlanders to walk, bike, and take transit. This position will support several programs including the distribution of SmartTrips educational information, Portland Sunday Parkways, and Portland By Cycle.

This work will connect transportation resources and promote bike education directly to Portland community members through events and programs.

What you’ll get to do:

Support planning and staffing of events such as bike rides, bike workshops, bike fairs, and open street events

Maintain outreach spreadsheets and conduct in-person canvassing

Provide customer service through phone or email, and in person at events

Prepare information packets for mailing

Support staff with editing, mailing, and distribution of outreach materials

Learn from the Education & Encouragement team and engage daily as a valued member of the team

Programs that will be supported by this position: About Portland Sunday Parkways: Portland Sunday Parkways promotes healthy active living through free events opening the city's largest public space to walk, bike, roll, and discover active transportation.

About SmartTrips: The City of Portland’s SmartTrips program provides information and resources to residents on getting around by walking, biking, and riding public transportation.

About Portland By Cycle: Portland By Cycle offers bike-focused community events like guided bike rides and skill-building workshops. All activities are free and open to everyone.

Safe System CSA II The Safe System CSA will work with the Safe Routes to School and Vision Zero programs. This work is grounded in prevention and building a safe system for all people, especially Portland’s most vulnerable community members. The position’s primary goal is to support these programs with communications, customer service, administrative support, outreach, research, simple data analysis, and events that encourage Portlanders to walk, bike, and take transit.

What you’ll get to do:

Provide customer service via phone or email to respond to public inquiries related to traffic safety, Safe Routes to School, and Vision Zero programs

Support staff with editing, mailing, and distributing outreach materials for both programs

Conduct special projects or research into topics that support traffic safety

Perform simple data analysis under the direction of data professionals

Attend events, support classroom sessions, and talk with community members about safety issues and resources

Learn from safety team and engage daily as a valued member of the team

Required Qualifications

Ability to provide customer service in person, via email, and over the phone.

Experience with effective written and oral communications.

Experience and comfort using a variety of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Experience with serving and communicating effectively with people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender backgrounds.

Optional Qualifications

Be bilingual in Spanish or another language.

Have experience with GIS mapping.

Have experience or education in planning, community development or public health.
