Family Services Specialist III – Child Protective Services (CPS)
Salary Range: $56,954 - $74,040
The City of Fredericksburg Department of Social Services (FDSS) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Family Services Specialist to join our team as a CPS worker. This full-time position offers an opportunity to work in a positive environment where you can make a meaningful impact.
Key Responsibilities
Perform complex case management duties for City Social Services programs
Handle sensitive cases involving child/adult abuse/neglect, out-of-home placements, and more
Conduct interviews, investigations, and respond to referrals
Establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, families, and human service agencies
Participate in meetings like permanency planning, Family Partnership Meetings, and court proceedings
Be part of an on-call rotation with a one-hour response requirement
Maintain detailed records and prepare necessary reports
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a Human Services field, or any bachelor’s degree with 2 years of relevant
Ability to pass a criminal background check, including a clean search of the Virginia Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry
Valid Virginia State driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in social services program areas and completion of relevant training
Prior experience with Local Department of Social Services (LDSS)
Multilingual abilities
Essential Job Functions
Provide professional case management, referrals, and assistance to clients
Manage cases that require involvement in sensitive situations
Conduct interviews and assess client needs
Collaborate with families, schools, hospitals, and other organizations
Respond to emergency calls and provide intervention as needed
Perform clerical and administrative duties in support of caseload management
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Understanding of laws and regulations governing social services programs
Proficiency in interviewing and interpersonal techniques
Awareness of community social and economic factors
Work Environment
Regularly handle crisis situations requiring major decisionsPotential exposure to high levels of stress from distressed clients
Eligible for telework (2 days a week once fully trained)
