Key Responsibilities The Assistant Manager, Operations is responsible for managing and providing training for ILA rail, vessel and yard gangs and stevedoring with the objective of maintaining a safe work environment, maximizing marine, yard and gate productivity, controlling cost and meeting terminal and operational requirements. Assist with the enforcement of the security plan to ensure compliance with Federal Regulations CFR 105. Continue to improve customer service and provide an environmentally safe working environment for all ELZ and ILA employees.

Ensure all daily work assignments are completed properly and safely by the Foremen/Chief Supervisors and hourly union labor you supervise.

Direct the Foreman/Chief Supervisors in their daily work assignments to minimize labor cost and maximize terminal efficiency.

Determine and order appropriate labor, including additional labor as needed and as business needs require.

Hire, schedule, and direct competent labor in the performance of their daily work assignments.

Monitor arrival times of all labor, authorize any necessary overtime, ensure proper payroll identification and adjustments.

Determine terminal equipment requirements and direct labor working in the grounding operation to maximize yard space, secure chassis, and improve vessel productivity.

Use independent judgment to make important operational decisions, such as shifting operating units between tasks and vessels, with the goal of improving overall terminal operations.

Develop and execute operating plans throughout the terminal facility.

Carry out discipline of supervised labor, including warning, citing, replacing, or firing as required.

Direct I.L.A. Foremen/Chief Supervisors to achieve efficient and safe operations, including appropriate discipline of rank and file labor.

Issue appropriate discipline to I.L.A. Foremen/Chief Supervisors when necessary.

Familiarize yourself with labor agreements and grievance adjustment procedures.

Handle grievances expeditiously, obtaining facts and using independent judgment to adjust grievances.

Determine and implement appropriate grievance resolution, such as hiring additional labor or providing time‑in‑lieu.

Work with other management team members to resolve grievances cooperatively.

Operate motor vehicles legally within the terminal facility; possess a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one.

The ideal candidate will have the following Education and Experience

High school diploma/GED; college degree preferred.

Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.

Basic proficiency with mobile phones and mobile apps.

Ability and flexibility to work nights, holidays, and weekends; may require extended shift hours based on business need.

Current valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one and obtain insurance via company policies.

Ability to stand and sit for long periods while patrolling trucks.

Knowledge of continuous improvement projects and/or process improvements to add value to APM Terminals.

Preferred Qualifications: (Nice to have)

2+ years supervisory or management experience.

3+ years transportation, supply chain, warehouse, stevedoring experience or equivalent military experience.

Work is mostly performed outdoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will have to withstand exposure to outdoor/adverse working conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; extreme heat and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally noisy.
