Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in a health-related field (Nursing or Ancillary Service) required.
A minimum of three years of related clinical experience, plus three years of patient safety/risk management experience required.
Working knowledge of Joint Commission standards.
Excellent oral and interpersonal written communication skills.
Strong organizing and data management skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, database and graphics to design and implement monitoring and evaluation tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Nursing, Administration or Business preferred.
Job Summary Responsible for protecting UTMB, its patients, and staff through facilitating the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient safety activities and initiatives. Provides ongoing support to the clinical Risk Management programs, clinical issues, and incident management. Documents and communicates improvements resulting from patient safety programs.
Essential Job Functions
Monitors, collects, evaluates and maintains data concerning risk issues including online occurrence reports through UTMB’s designated reporting system.
Plans, directs and coordinates execution of patient safety program activities to insure goals and objectives specified are accomplished in accordance with prescribed priorities, time limitations, and regulatory guidelines.
Participates in the design, implementation and evaluation of current patient safety program and determination of implementation schedule for new initiatives.
Implements the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals and other patient safety initiatives including monitoring compliance and developing action plans to sustain compliance.
Facilitates development of patient safety tools and collecting/analyzing/reporting data from interventions. Conducts patient or clinical systems tracers assessing compliance with Joint Commission and CMS standards.
Adheres to and assists with implementation of institutional Patient Safety Plan.
Provides both formal and informal education on patient safety program, initiatives, and use of incident reporting system.
Actively participates in committees related to risk management, patient safety, and quality improvement, as assigned and warranted.
Serves as a liaison, and a resource, for faculty and staff of patient safety initiatives.
Frequent and ongoing rounding of assigned areas to evaluate effectiveness of patient safety program and patient safety initiatives. Identifying areas for opportunity for performance improvement.
