The Transportation Manager plays a critical role in managing the safe, compliant, and efficient transport of environmental materials, including non-hazardous and hazardous waste, recyclables, and other regulated substances. This position oversees fleet operations, routing, driver compliance, and service delivery to support environmental protection, client satisfaction, and regulatory compliance.

Duties & Responsibilities

Ensures all DOT regulatory requirements are met and maintained as they pertain to the drivers, manifesting, and transportation assets of the company.

Ensure drivers have the required materials to service clients, including manifests (customer/product specific and BLANK), labels, delivery tickets, etc. (Route Book).

Ensures trucks/trailers are equipped with adequate material handling equipment, spill kits, and OTR tool kits.

Ensure drivers have all maintenance materials needed to perform pre and post trip inspections and small repairs such as headlight bulbs, windshield wipers, etc.

Responsible for the load design of route service trucks to ensure all materials requested by customers are loaded for delivery.

Receives scheduled and emergency client requests for service and allocates appropriate resources for pickup or delivery in line with plant processing capabilities.

Responsible for the maintenance and repair of trucks and trailers. Updates the GM and PM of the status of trucks and trailers as necessary to meet customer needs.

Responsible for truck/trailer cleanliness and company provided amenities.

Manage driver route assignments, driver hours worked, PTO and vacation. Accommodate drivers when needed (Vacation, PTO, additional routes, etc.).

Works with Sales, Plant and General Managers to establish and expand routes, or in some instances collapse or cancel routes in accordance with the best interest of SSSI and its clients.

Works with PM to schedule all loads/routes, both inbound and outbound, in a manner that maximizes route efficiency, so they can be processed smoothly without bottlenecking.

Works with PM to design holiday route changes required to meet customer and plant needs.

Manages the Transportation Budget.

Maintains Asset Tags and Hazardous Waste Transporter Permit (in conjunction with DOT Compliance).

Assists in the hiring and training of route service drivers.

Serve as driver/trainer including road testing of new hires, until otherwise assigned.

Oversee and coordinate driver training.

Participates in review/evaluation of all drivers (as needed, annual).

Monitors and Maintains Motive software and equipment, including daily/weekly reconciliation of all trips and activity.

Maintain all driver files, DOT training, and driver logs in compliance with DOT regulations.

Maintain a Class A CDL with Hazmat, tanker, and air brake endorsement and perform assigned transportation duties as a driver, as needed.

As assigned by the Plant Manager:

Places designated trailers and trucks at designated locations for loading or unloading.

Coordinate all outbound waste streams: nonhazardous, hazardous, recyclables, universal waste, oils, etc.

Coordinates with vendors providing inbound transportation for trailer swaps and pickups.

Supports GM and PM in software/application development and implementation.

Perform any other duties reasonably related to the Employee’s role as Transportation Manager, as assigned by the PM or GM.

Qualifications

Valid Driver License (Class A CDL with Hazmat, Tanker, and Air Brake Endorsement).

Must have basic knowledge of waste profiling, manifesting, and transportation.

Must have computer skills (excel, manifesting software, various Fleet programs).

Ability to effectively communicate with customers and coworkers.

Willingness to work 10-hour days and overtime weekly (if needed).

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Must submit to a background check and pre-employment drug screen.

Must be eligible to work for any employer in the U.S.A.
