Risk Program Manager WVU Medicine St. Joseph's Hospital

As a Risk Program Manager, you will assist leadership in developing and implementing enterprise‑wide risk management and performance improvement strategies. You will coordinate systems for risk identification, investigation, and reduction, and collaborate with Quality/Patient Safety and other healthcare teams to develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate the Health Systems Event Reporting System.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Provide support to leadership, including development of system reports within the Incident Reporting System, and follow up with Risk Managers and leadership as needed.

Manage data, investigation, and reporting; support education components of the Risk Management Program and promote patient safety initiatives.

Navigate system-wide modules for risk identification, investigation, and reduction.

Conduct case findings by reviewing reported events and other sources, initiating appropriate follow‑up.

Identify, analyze, and solve problems; demonstrate strong analytical and data display skills.

Coordinate intervention and education related to risk management issues to promote safe work practices and quality care.

Manage the risk management program day‑to‑day through analysis of patient safety and medication error processes.

Investigate root causes, patterns, or trends that could lead to compensatory or sentinel events; identify opportunities for improvement.

Assess system-wide risks and adverse occurrences; assist with investigation and oversight of significant adverse events.

Participate in facilities, committees related to clinical risk management, patient safety, and quality improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:

Seven (7) years in a healthcare setting.

Three (3) years working directly with professional liability insurance carriers or captives.

Five (5) years in claims and related legal proceedings.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

Master’s degree in nursing or a medical‑related field.

Certified Professional in Health Care Risk Management (CPHRM).

Five (5) years working with professional liability insurance carriers or captives.

Physical Requirements

Manual dexterity to operate keyboards, telephones, and other equipment.

Adequate visual acuity and ability to read and comprehend information.

Ability to sit for extended periods; standing or walking may be required.

Some travel to other WVUHS hospital/entity locations.

Working Environment

General office‑like setting with occasional travel to other WVUHS facilities in West Virginia and surrounding region.

Skills and Abilities

Analytical skills to identify risks, gaps, root causes, patterns, or trends.

Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Presentation skills.
