Located 16 miles south west of Chicago, Bedford Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 580 in 2010. Bedford Park consists of a small residential area and vast amounts of heavy industry sprawling to the east with a small amount to the west.

The R&D Tool Shop moved from our Bridgeview Facility to its current location in 2009 and was renamed the Innovation Center. The facility houses 22 CNC machine tools, a prototype center, and various grinding and assembly equipment. The Innovation Center has approximately 30 shop employees as well as product and tool designers, project managers and corporate engineering staff. The Innovation Center earned Pactiv’s annual safety and environmental awards for the past three years with zero incidents.

Responsibilities

Engineer and design new tooling primarily for thermoforming plants (tableware, takeout containers, meat trays, etc.) secondarily for EPS cup plants.

Design tooling using 3‑D modeling software, while embracing continuous improvement and innovation to improve operational efficiency.

Provide basic electrical or mechanical technical support to engineering or manufacturing in the development, analysis, and maintenance of processes, products, or equipment.

Assist Tooling Manager with continuous improvement of tool design standards and standard parts.

Support legacy thermoform tooling in all rigid manufacturing locations.

Support legacy beaded foam cup tooling in all cup manufacturing locations.

Initiate required up‑front interaction with the product development team and the plants to ensure functional tooling designs for manufacturability and platform compatibility.

Assist Tooling Manager with preparation of documentation for the bidding process.

Interact with external and internal machine shops and vendors throughout design and build phases. May need to manage individual tooling builds.

Produce excellent and complete documentation in the tooling database for every tool designed and built.

Base salary of $89,000 plus benefits.

Qualifications

Three candidate types A, B and C. Prefer type A, but a B/C type with direct experience in thermoforming tooling design also highly desirable.

A) Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Prefer 1‑2 years of mechanical design experience but a fresh graduate is okay OR

B) 2‑year technical degree with minimum of 5 years of experience in thermoforming tooling design/engineering OR

C) Minimum of 7 years applicable tooling design/engineering experience in the thermoforming and/or molded fiber packaging industry.

CAD: Must have expert solid design and solid assembly proficiency in either Pro‑E, SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor. Proficiency in Pro‑E CAD platform is preferred.

Strong organizational skills.

Excellent attention to detail.

High analytical/problem‑solving ability.

Ability to communicate technical concepts with a positive and professional presence within the organization and with outside vendors.

Additional computer skills: proficiency required in Word, Excel, and SAP.

Some travel for startups of new tooling, 10‑20 %.
