Labs Administrator: Office of Innovative Technologies - UTK
The primary responsibility of this position is to design, develop, test, implement and document best practices for managing all aspects of the OIT Computer Labs’ infrastructure, including technical, logistical, staffing, and asset management. The role will gather and analyze relevant data, perform systematic analysis to identify problems, and implement innovative solutions. The successful candidate may act as a project lead on any size project and will work with minimal oversight, ensuring accuracy and quality in all deliverables.
Responsibilities
Ensure both OIT and departmental computer labs are stable, available, and reliable to meet evolving academic needs.
Define qualifications for lab configurations, test and evaluate configurations, and resolve issues before deployment to campus.
Research, analyze, and test newer technologies to develop and implement solutions that meet changing academic requirements.
Lead the annual project team to coordinate and deploy hardware and software upgrades in labs, ensuring upgrades are efficient and cause minimal disruption to end‑users.
Document and publish internal and external instructions for maintaining labs, including procedural, operational, and departmental policies.
Continuously maintain and resolve hardware and software issues, including securing printers against external breaches.
Hire, supervise, train, mentor, and develop staff.
Create, evaluate, and modify work processes as needed.
Document and communicate work processes and departmental policies internally and externally.
Ensure adherence to all labor rules, especially those involving student employees.
Create and provide training and technical documentation for staff and users.
Review and document staff performance, developing performance plans and additional training as needed.
Create and maintain a database of hardware and software configurations for both OIT and departmental labs, subject to annual auditing.
Gather and analyze utilization data to identify trends for software, hardware, and general lab usage.
Create reports for and make budget recommendations to management.
Document and update internal and external lab web pages.
Manage all lab procurement and liaise with vendors to develop mutually beneficial relationships.
Lead any size project.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Experience:
Three years of relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Experience in IT support, computer lab management, or a similar role within an educational or technical setting, including hands‑on hardware/software deployment, troubleshooting, and maintaining lab environments.
Broad knowledge of the current IT industry, including a wide variety of hardware, software and operating systems.
Knowledge and utilization of lab‑centric utilities such as DeepFreeze, Keyserver, etc., or their equivalents.
Strong organizational & logistical skills with attention to detail.
Strong leadership skills with experience managing staff.
Ability to analyze data, form conclusions, and quickly modify processes in a constantly changing IT environment.
Ability to act as project lead or mentor on any size project.
Ability to develop documentation and training.
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Excellent oral & written communication skills.
Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience:
Five years of relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of lab‑centric utilities such as DeepFreeze, Keyserver, etc.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications.
Demonstrated webpage development experience.
Work Location
Location: Knoxville, TN
Fully onsite with occasional opportunity for remote work.
Compensation and Benefits
UT market range: MR14
Anticipated hiring range: $74,000 - $86,000
Benefits include Health Insurance, Holidays and various paid leave.
