The Role The Mechanical System Engineer position requires a subject matter expert (SME) providing technical oversight for various mechanical utility distribution systems and plants. The Mechanical System Engineer will be required to develop a cohesive working relationship with utility system operators and maintenance personnel. The candidate should have extensive knowledge of piping principles, centrifugal pumps, and water distribution systems.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within assigned utility system(s)
Provide engineering resolutions for system problems/configuration changes
Produce and/or oversee the development of technical documentation that governs the system design, configuration, and operation.
Develop a long-range strategic plan for improvements to assigned utility system(s)
Participate in the development of planned maintenance requirements
Support resolution of unplanned events
Develop and maintain critical system metrics
Participate in project design and implementation process for system related projects
Oversee project/system testing to ensure system meets technical requirements and operates at peak performance
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
Must Have
Bachelor’s Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience
Master’s Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
Nice to Have
Mechanical Engineering degree with a Professional Engineering (PE) license, or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) working towards PE registration, is preferred
Knowledge of ASME codes and experience with heavy industrial mechanical systems is preferred
Shipyard/Nuclear facilities experience is desirable
Knowledge of NFPA codes and standards is preferred
