The salary range for this position is $22.58–$29.35 per hour. Placement within this range depends on relevant work experience, internal equity, and applicable collective bargaining agreements for union positions.

Description The Emergency Room Technician reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine. The ER Tech adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens.

Perform laboratory tests including phlebotomy, accucheck glucose test, urine pregnancy test, rapid strep test, specific gravity test, and blood glucose test.

Obtain and record vital signs.

Perform 12‑lead EKGs; recognize basic arrhythmias; admit and discharge patients from the cardiac monitoring system.

Irrigate wounds, apply dressings, bandages, and splints.

Assist with patient ambulation, positioning, comfort activities, and feeding as needed.

Assist RN or physician with exams and minor procedures.

Respond to emergencies seeking appropriate personnel for specific interventions.

Administer simple oxygen masks or nasal cannulas.

Prime IV bags and tubing; disconnect IV or heplock.

Transport patients to and from radiology for diagnostic testing.

Transport blood and blood components to the laboratory.

Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers; transport patients, belongings, and equipment.

Assist with post‑mortem care.

Contact various departments, other healthcare facilities, and physician offices for diagnostic testing and results.

Enter orders into the computer system.

Maintain ER log book and statistics.

Maintain ER charts, updating as information becomes available.

Update‑call physician schedules for the emergency department.

Ensure appropriate supplies are maintained in the storeroom; place routine and special orders as needed.

Qualifications Required

High School diploma or equivalent

CNA or EMT‑B

CPR through American Heart Association

Physical demands: lift/carry up to 50 pounds and a push/pull force up to 50 pounds

Preferred

One year of experience
