Bridge Inspection Technician / Engineer - Springfield, Illinois There is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Bridge Inspection Technician or Engineer interested in leading inspection teams across Illinois. This role involves conducting field inspections, preparing detailed reports, entering NBIS data into the Illinois Highway Information System (IHIS), and ensuring compliance with federal and state safety regulations. Salary Range $70,000 - $100,000 annually

Responsibilities

Lead and coordinate bridge inspection teams in accordance with IDOT and FHWA guidelines.

Stay current with IDOT/FHWA regulations, inspection techniques, and certification requirements.

Assist with scheduling, logistics, and equipment preparation.

Ensure safety protocols are followed: traffic control, fall protection, MEWP operation, and confined space entry.

Conduct hands‑on and visual inspections of highway bridges, culverts, and related structures.

Perform specialized inspections of fracture‑critical or non‑redundant tension members.

Document structural conditions using inspection software and non‑destructive testing equipment (Ultrasonic gauge, delamination tools).

Prepare detailed inspection reports, sketches, and photographic documentation.

Communicate findings to project managers, clients, and regulatory agencies.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering OR related bridge inspection experience meeting FHWA Team Leader requirements.

Minimum 4 years bridge inspection experience, including 2+ years NBIS inspections.

Ability to obtain or hold certifications:

IDOT Certified Team Lead (TL)

Fracture Critical Member (FCM) / Non‑Redundant Steel Tension Member (NSTM)

MEWP

Confined space entry

Familiarity with AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation, FHWA NBIS standards, and IDOT policies.

Valid driver's license.

Strong communication skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.

Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions and travel across Illinois.

Preferred Skills

Rope access or under‑bridge inspection platform experience.

UAS drone certification for aerial inspections.

Proficiency with inspection software (IHIS, InspectTech, AASHTOWare).

Experience with load rating inspections and structural modeling.
