Job Purpose The Gear Process Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing and maintaining manufacturing processes for gear production. This role involves applying engineering principles to improve efficiency, quality and cost‑effectiveness in gear machining and assembly operations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and maintain CNC programs for pinion and ring blanking, overseeing cutting tool and workholding selection and design.

Request quotations from vendors, compose RFAs, cost justifications and specify shifts as required.

Lead cross‑functional team (maintenance, automation, operations, etc.) for new product launches and process troubleshooting.

Develop and update documentation, including process sheets, PFMEA and control plans.

Develop team leaders in production departments.

Resolve quality and tooling issues.

Assist in troubleshooting processes.

Train and teach production supervisors.

Develop layouts to facilitate Dana’s production system.

Coordinate all sales inquiries and program launches through APQP, including coordination of the manufacture and movement of pre‑production material through the production departments.

Develop and maintain poka‑yoke devices.

Develop and maintain automation solutions for manufacturing.

Ensure timely completion of all estimates.

Obtain quotations for new capital and tooling as needed.

Create blackboard or directional estimates as required.

Conduct capacity analysis.

Contribute to business‑unit manufacturing strategy.

Plan equipment moves within Ft. Wayne and the business unit.

Use protective clothing, ear protection and PPE as required by facility safety requirements.

Job Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering or technology field with CNC programming capability and a minimum of three years experience.

Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications, including GD&T standards.

Must have proven mechanical aptitude and knowledge of proper usage and application of measuring equipment.

Work effectively, efficiently and be a self‑starter.

Demonstrate proficient written and verbal communication skills in English.

Use various computer operating systems and software as necessary, including Microsoft Office and machine‑specific operating systems.

Strong problem‑solving techniques.

Must be able to work inside and outside the plant unsupervised for extended periods of time.

Must be available to flex shifts and work on weekends to support engineering and/or production systems.

Be able to travel to machine manufacturers, customers, suppliers and other locations on short notice; travel may span several days and may be abroad.

May be required to attend gear manufacturing courses, tool shows, gear shows and seminars that may last weeks and require foreign travel.

Must have or be eligible for a passport for foreign travel and hold a valid driver’s license.

Recommended

Thorough knowledge of face milling, face‑hobbing, grinding, turning, heat treatment and other processes used in gear manufacturing.

Prior experience with an organized labor force.
