Under general direction and according to diagrams, operation manuals and manufacturers' specifications; the boiler plant mechanic/operator tends one or more boilers to produce steam or high-temperature water. Tends one or more centrifugal chillers; tends one or more low-pressure and high-pressure air compressors. Tends all related auxiliaries, pumps, regulators, meters, blowers, fans, de-mineralizers, softeners, electrical, mechanical and pneumatic control devices. The boiler plant mechanic/operator also uses the computer system for operations in order to meet government and manufacturer's specifications. Maintains a log of various aspects of operations.
According to diagrams, operatin manuals, and manufacturer's specifications, performs complex repairs and overhaul of central heating plants, their components and auxiliary equipment; including automatic or manually controlled boilers, burners, pumps, regulators, meters, blowers, fans, de-mineralizers; electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic control devices and air compressors. Performs chemical analysis of boiler water and cooling towers and chemical treatment as required; determines fuel requirements and maintains all related pumps, valves, and piping. Inspects and runs preventive maintenance routines and safety checks according to the government and manufacturer's specifications. Uses hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring and testing equipment and devices. Inspects, repairs, and replaces defective parts and components as necessary to ensure continuous and safe operation. Assists government personnel during the annual certification inspections. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school education or equivalent
Four (4) years experience in repair, operation, and overhaul of boiler plant and related equipment, both stationary and mobile
Must understand chemical treatment of boilers and cooling towers
Knowledge of the use of general and specialized tools to perform necessary repair operations
Ability to troubleshoot systems and components
Must possess the standard tools of the trade
Must possess a valid state driver's license
Must have and wear hard-toed safety shoes that meet ASTM F2413-05 standards.
Successful candidate will be subject to a government security investigation and must continually meet eligibility requirements for access to all areas of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.
