Job Summary Building Access and Control Technician–Locksmith Technician I Perform entry‑level locksmith tasks and assist in resolving basic lock and key service requests. Support the installation, operation, and maintenance of advanced computer‑based security and other systems. Help with campus‑wide security systems that detect intrusion alarms, fire alarms, emergency phones, elevator emergencies, and card access. Assist in preparing resources and tools for routine tasks and participate in training to develop proficiency in electronic security systems and safety protocols. Maintain accurate records of preventative maintenance and repair schedules under supervision. Closely adhere to industry and university best practices and safety requirements. The Locksmith Tech is responsible for performing skilled work involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of building lock systems, including cylindrical, unit, mortise, rim, and reload cylinders. The role also involves repairing and replacing panic hardware, door closers, desk locks, file cabinet locks, display case locks, and other container‑type locking mechanisms.

Responsibilities

Perform entry‑level locksmith tasks and assist in resolving basic lock and key service requests.

Help with campus‑wide key and lock systems and card access.

Assist in preparing resources and tools for routine tasks and participate in training to develop proficiency in the key and lock systems, card access and safety protocols.

Maintain accurate records of preventative maintenance and repair schedules under supervision.

Closely adhere to industry and university best practices and safety requirements.

Independently perform locksmith services and support advanced master key systems.

Collaborate with campus departments to evaluate and implement key and lock systems and card access to meet University standards.

Use test equipment to evaluate system functionality and troubleshoot issues.

Provide recommendations for system improvements and ensure accurate documentation of maintenance activities.

Manage complex locksmith tasks and lead the design, installation, and maintenance of complex master key systems and software.

Supervise programming ensuring all security protocols are operational.

Train other technicians and operators, provide work direction, and oversee compliance with preventative maintenance schedules.

Minimum Qualifications

1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Requires little to no related experience for Technician I.

Requires at least 1 year of related experience for Technician II.

Requires 3+ years of related experience for Technician III.

Preferences

High school diploma or equivalent for Locksmith Access Technician I.

1‑2 years of experience in locksmithing or access control for Technician II.

3‑5 years of locksmith/access control experience for Technician II.

Two years of full‑time general locksmith experience, or equivalent (one year of education may substitute for one year of related work experience).

Strong understanding of master key system fundamentals, with the ability to develop key codes compatible with existing master key systems.

Experience using both manual and computerized key record and filing systems.

Demonstrated interpersonal and effective communication skills.

Mechanically inclined and able to work collaboratively as part of a team.
