Fleet Mechanic II Job Summary Under the supervision of the Chief Mechanic or designee, this skilled role involves the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel‑powered vehicles and equipment. Employees perform journey‑level repair on light and medium motorized vehicles, overseeing overhauls, troubleshooting, and diagnostic testing.

Responsibilities

Perform repairs, tune‑ups, diagnostics tests, and major overhauls on a wide variety of light and medium equipment, including diesel, hybrids, and CNG.

Respond to road service calls and service disabled vehicles for all mechanical malfunctions.

Input and retrieve work orders from a computerized fleet maintenance program.

Direct preventative maintenance and simple repair activities of semi‑skilled automotive workers.

Inspect, adjust, and replace valves, pistons, bearings, brakes, cooling, fuel, ignition, electrical, and exhaust systems; diagnose systems using electronic scanner equipment.

Overhaul and service hydraulic and vacuum controls and components.

Operate service vehicles and tow trucks; perform on‑road service on disabled vehicles.

Diagnose and repair specialized police vehicle emergency equipment.

Diagnose and repair suspension problems; set steering to factory specifications.

Road‑test equipment after repair.

Perform related work as required for this position description.

Education and Experience Required:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent, or vocational school plus four (4) years of experience as a journey‑level automotive mechanic. Must possess a valid State of Florida CDL Class B license within six (6) months of hire.

Additional education and experience may be substituted.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

Valid State of Florida CDL Class B License within six months of hire.

Valid Driver's License with proof of automobile insurance.

Background check with acceptable record.

Driving abstract with acceptable record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of standard automotive repair practices and equipment.

Knowledge of hybrid, CNG, and electric vehicle systems.

Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and light/medium equipment repair.

Knowledge of heavy trucks and equipment.

Knowledge of trade hazards.

Skill in using shop tools and equipment.

Skill in troubleshooting and adjusting defects in automotive equipment.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, air, and electronic systems.

Ability to diagnose and repair diesel engines.

Ability to instruct and direct personnel for routine maintenance and repair.

Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and automotive diagrams.

Ability to use computer‑related vehicle and truck diagnostic programs.

Ability to adapt tools and parts to specific repair work.

Ability to maintain professional relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and the public.

Physical Demands The role requires walking, sitting, writing, speaking, and frequent lifting or carrying of up to 50 pounds. Manual dexterity and vision (close, distance, peripheral, depth) are required. Reasonable accommodations can be provided.

Work Environment The position involves moderate to heavy physical activity in an outdoor setting, with exposure to weather, insects, animals, and hazards from heavy equipment.
