Senior Field Engineer Civil
Zachry Engineering Corporation (ZEC) is currently seeking a talented and self‑motivated Senior Field Civil Engineer to join our Charlotte, NC office. The ideal candidate will lead exciting civil construction projects and be responsible for monitoring construction activities associated with building industrial facilities. This hands‑on role requires strong technical skills and often involves working closely with construction crews and resolving issues that arise during construction.
Responsibilities
Lead, plan, design and manage permits for civil engineering, land development and infrastructure projects.
Conduct site visits to ensure that construction work aligns with design specifications and blueprints.
Prepare and modify engineering documents including reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, cost estimates and design plans for projects using engineering and design software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, etc.).
Establish and verify survey control, lay out secondary control points for building elements such as columns and walls.
Use reports, maps, drawings, test and aerial photographs to assess soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics and topographic/geologic data and their impact on project planning and design.
Recommend new approaches and ideas that continuously improve efficiency and services.
Collaborate with team members on project tasks and assignments.
Analyze, evaluate, and interpret data from site investigations, providing input on developing action plans for moderate‑to‑high‑level risk mitigation activities.
Interact with architects, consultants, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
Design and ensure the safety of temporary structures used during construction.
Consider construction costs, government regulations, potential environmental hazards, and other factors during planning and risk analysis.
Perform material take‑offs for steel and concrete on industrial projects.
Write technical specifications and scopes of work for steel, concrete, and geotechnical materials.
Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited university.
Minimum 12 years of site civil engineering experience.
Engineer in Training certification and active pursuit of Professional Engineer licensure.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
Experience with grading and earthwork site design.
Experience with stormwater drainage analysis using Autodesk Storm & Sanitary Analysis (SSA).
Knowledge of environmental permitting (e.g., NPDES, wetlands, 404, Phase 1 ESA).
Experience with site layout for parking, access, roadways, and ADA compliance.
Experience with roadway/paving design and specifications.
Surveying knowledge: topographical, boundary, plats, coordinate systems.
Geotechnical knowledge related to site work preparation, roadway and heavy‑haul paving design, and security gate/fencing design.
Excellent communication and presentation skills (verbal and written).
