Position Summary:

The Process Engineer III is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) who ensures all necessary components, tasks, and resources meet established quality standards and goals, supports department operations, and maintains compliance with cGMP, OSHA regulations, SOPs, and production objectives.

Responsibilities

Apply engineering and science fundamentals to create new methods and programs that drive production and process improvements.

Document existing process flows using Visio and build baselines for future improvements.

Lead cross‑functional teams to develop detailed PFMEAs for all major manufacturing processes, compile mitigation plans for high‑risk areas, and execute corrective and preventative actions.

Investigate chronic performance issues, initiate and lead projects, and assemble process engineering teams to deliver optimal solutions.

Optimize and scale production processes and batch sizes to expand capacity without compromising quality, efficiency, or compliance.

Conduct process trials and lab experiments—including benchwork formulation, powder characterization, and encapsulation—as directed by the Engineering Manager and provide detailed analysis.

Support product development by performing technical assessments for new or clinical‑trial products.

Maintain lab equipment and test procedures to ensure compliance with quality and regulatory requirements.

Research new process equipment and create equipment User Requirement Specifications (URS) with end users.

Research and recommend new processing technologies applicable to Thorne’s processes.

Identify skill gaps among Process Engineers and Technicians and provide developmental guidance and mentoring.

Create a comprehensive process engineering knowledge base with systems for periodic reviews and updates to support plant‑wide continuous improvement.

Support production activities such as powder blending, mixing, SOP change control, equipment capability evaluation, powder characterization testing, and MRB/validation activities.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Food Science/Engineering, or a related scientific field (Master’s acceptable with 3+ years of experience).

5+ years of hands‑on experience in process development or process engineering in a FDA‑regulated pharmaceutical or nutraceutical environment.

Experience with powder characterization, mixing/blending, and bulk material handling and processing.

Experience with lab equipment, pilot jobs, and GLP‑standard experimentation.

Experience with encapsulation of HPMC capsules using high‑speed tamping equipment (highly preferred).

Proficiency in statistics, Design of Experiments (DOE), Minitab, Visio, and project scheduling with MS Project.

Strong scientific problem‑solving skills and experience creating detailed PFMEAs at an SME level.
