ENGINEER STRUCTURAL 4 – HII – Newport News Shipbuilding

Join HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division as a senior Level 4 Structural Engineer (E4) in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (Department E83) supporting maintenance, overhaul, and modernization of CVN68 Class aircraft carriers. The role focuses on ship alteration development, structural foundation design, nuclear lifting and handling, robotic inspection techniques, and maintaining nuclear cognizant structure.

The Role Analyze, research, and develop structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic, and composite structural materials for product design or operation of product including structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating equipment, and maintenance designs. Analyze damage tolerance, durability, design allowables, and structural modeling. Specialize in dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue, and thermal analysis. Tools utilized include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer, and other software applications.

Responsibilities

Lead efforts in ship alteration development, structural foundation design, nuclear lifting and handling, robotic inspection techniques, and the maintenance of nuclear cognizant structure.

Coordinate with maintenance, shipwright, and quality teams to ensure design compliance and execution.

Prepare and review structural foundation drawings, fabrication and welding procedures, and non‑destructive test requirements for structural welds.

Develop component handling procedures and calculation methodologies for nuclear lifting and handling requirements.

Support CVN68 Class operational readiness through adjudication of LARs and other special studies.

Provide oversight and direction for less experienced engineers and mentor junior staff.

Communicate complex technical solutions clearly and concisely; deliver technical reports and presentations.

Ensure protection against corrosion, apply protective coatings, and incorporate nuclear shielding considerations.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program and 9 years of relevant exempt experience.

Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience, or Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Expertise in naval ship structural design, ship alteration products, and execution by maintenance activities.

Experience with CVN68 Class ships and ship arrangement knowledge.

Experience with structural foundation drawings, fabrication and welding of ship structure, and non‑destructive test requirements for structural welds.

Proficiency in nuclear lifting and handling requirements and associated handling procedures.

Strong leadership, project management, communication, and written‑communication skills.

Self‑starter, highly motivated; ability to work independently and in groups with minimal oversight.

Location Newport News, VA – Salary: $65,000.00 – $80,000.00 per year.
