Job Description
Job Summary The Assurance Senior Manager develops suggestions to improve client internal controls and accounting procedures, advises on economic and regulatory risks in a specific industry field, identifies financial and non‑financial performance measures, formulates and communicates the audit plan, answers complex questions involving GAAP and GAAS, and composes technical consultation memos on engagements related to GAAP/GAAS issues. The role also includes marketing, networking, and business development within the area of expertise while maintaining key client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex client queries. The manager is a critical part of the office’s Assurance leadership team, involving direct supervision, problem resolution, and delegation stages of the overall audit.
Key Responsibilities
Control Environment
Applies advanced knowledge and understanding of the collective effect of factors on control effectiveness and risk mitigation.
Applies advanced understanding of overall control environment and supervisory controls.
Validates and assesses effectiveness of internal control over financial reporting.
Identifies and communicates suggestions to improve client internal controls and accounting procedures.
Delegates functions of the audit to the auditor in charge as deemed appropriate.
Supervises audit team work, reviews workpapers and conclusions, preferably onsite during audit field work.
Provides on‑job training to engagement staff during audit field work.
GAAP
Applies advanced knowledge of governing principles; documents and communicates understanding and application to client transactions.
Identifies and consults with clients on the impact of new accounting pronouncements.
Discusses alternative applications of GAAP and arguments for/against alternatives.
Drafts complex financial statements and related footnotes; effectively communicates these to client.
Identifies complex accounting issues, documents resolution, and seeks counsel of BDO technical experts as needed.
SEC and PCAOB
Applies advanced knowledge of SEC regulations and PCAOB guidelines.
Reviews SEC filings (MD&A, financial statements, disclosures) for appropriateness, completeness and accuracy.
Reviews required communications to the client and Audit Committee; ensures completeness, accuracy and compliance.
Reviews Section 404 internal control audit work for completeness and compliance.
Ensures compliance with engagement independence requirements and consults internally as needed.
GAAS
Applies advanced knowledge of professional standards and the ability to document and communicate understanding on engagements.
Provides guidance, affirms conclusions of others, and communicates matters required to be reported to governance.
Uses efficiency tools such as statistical sampling, CAATS, etc.
Methodology
Applies BDO standards, policies and technology to deliver quality services.
Conducts detailed review to assure audit completion per assurance manual standards.
Prepares or reviews communications to management and audit committees.
Recommends appropriate outcomes to critical issues.
Initiates and prepares client acceptance/retention procedures.
Plans the audit process and oversees execution with quality, efficiency and compliance with deadlines.
Executes proper BDO methodology including archiving procedures.
Considers Sarbanes‑Oxley rules for combined 404 and financial statement audits of public clients.
Research
Applies methodology to seek information from authoritative sources and draw conclusions.
Defines methodology to conduct research projects and completes them timely.
Uses advanced research tools to draw conclusions.
Prepares memo supporting research/conclusions and consults with others if appropriate.
Presents issues to RTD or concurring reviewer effectively and accurately.
Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Sets tone for teamwork, supporting others and delivering on commitments.
Supervises managers, associates, and senior associates on all projects.
Reviews work prepared by staff and provides review comments.
Acts as Career Advisor to associates and senior associates.
Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates.
Provides verbal and written performance feedback.
Teaches/coaches staff to provide on‑job learning.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree, required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics, preferred.
Master’s degree in Accountancy, preferred.
Seven (7) or more years of prior relevant audit experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience, required.
Prior significant supervisory experience, required.
Industry expertise in one or more assurance specialty, preferred.
License and Certifications
Active licensed US CPA, recognized active international equivalent or unique qualification as defined by BDO’s Assurance Licensing Policy, required.
If active international equivalent or unique qualification, required to obtain an active US CPA license within approved timeframe as defined by firm licensing requirement guidelines.
Technical Skills
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, preferred.
Experience with assurance applications and research tools, preferred.
Additional Skills and Abilities
Strong leadership skills and role‑modeling for managers and staff.
Advanced GAAP and GAAS knowledge.
Sound working knowledge of SEC and PCAOB rules.
