Job Description Under the supervision of the Director of Advising in collaboration with the Supervisor of Advising, the College Advisor is a vital contact for all program students to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. The advisor collaborates closely with valued partners (Advising Peers, Recruitment, Admissions, Career, Financial Aid, Retention Coaches, Student Life, faculty) to provide coordinated care, academic, and non‑academic advice.
Responsibilities
Student Advising:
Performs comprehensive academic advising for current students, conducts group workshops, provides individual advising sessions, assesses scores/GPA, reviews transcripts and program plans, teaches course registration, advises on academic decisions and career development.
Education Planning Leadership:
Assesses strengths and weaknesses, identifies alternatives based on student goals, interprets assessment results, remains current on MATC transfer credit policies and financial aid processes.
Academic Monitoring and Success Planning:
Monitors program plans, determines eligibility and satisfactory progress, creates Monitored Academic Plans (MAP), collaborates with Retention Coaches on suspension workshops.
Resource Guidance:
Refers students to additional resources, guides use of student portal, maintains accurate student reports.
Data and Reporting:
Uses EAB Navigate, Ellucian tools, generates accurate student reports and tracking notes.
Customer Service and Engagement:
Provides excellent advising, collaborates with Pathway team for orientation and success workshops.
Ethics and Confidentiality:
Adheres to strong moral principles, maintains confidentiality.
Collaborative Teamwork and Stakeholder Relationship Management:
Builds positive relationships with staff, faculty, and administrators.
Continuous Learning & Professional Development:
Maintains current knowledge of best practices, participates in training, workshops, and professional associations.
Other Duties:
Performs additional related duties as required for the division’s efficient operation.
Qualifications
Compliance:
Must comply with all state, federal, accreditation standards, and MATC policies.
Required Education & Experience:
Associate’s degree & five years of related experience or Bachelor’s degree & two years of related experience in higher education advising, success coaching, or related student services.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of academic advising and career development practices.
Knowledge of admissions, enrollment, registration procedures, student support services, and the MATC Student Handbook.
Knowledge of MATC programs of study and transfer agreements.
Knowledge of workforce education trends, occupations, and career options.
Knowledge of College organization, strategic goals, and policies.
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
Ability to identify community resources and connect students.
Ability to coordinate events between multiple teams.
Ability to engage in active listening, questioning, and effective conversations.
Ability to train stakeholders on software and concepts.
Ability to analyze data and write reports.
Ability to think critically and solve complex problems creatively.
Ability to deliver public presentations.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
Ability to maintain effective relationships with diverse student and employee populations.
Proficiency in computers and software specific to the position.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and lead others.
Ability to organize work, manage projects, and meet deadlines.
Hours 38.75 hours per week (Monday–Thursday 8 AM–6 PM; Friday 8 AM–4:30 PM). Flexibility for evenings, weekends, special events, and one Saturday per semester is required.
Salary Determined by experience and internal equity; listed to the midpoint of the salary range.
