Job Summary Inspectors are responsible for inspecting, testing, and maintaining fire sprinkler systems, fire pumps, and backflows with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
Inspect, test, and maintain fire protection systems in accordance with NFPA codes, including sprinkler controls, alarm panels, devices, and critical components.
Record and report deficiencies of fire protection systems to SFS and customers.
Communicate with internal and external customers as well as off‑site monitoring companies in a professional manner.
Properly use and operate the tools required to complete the inspection (heat and smoke detector kit, backflow kit, pump equipment).
Plan, coordinate, and complete inspections as scheduled and in a timely manner.
Be in an on‑call status as required by location to handle emergency service and inspection requests.
Ensure company‑provided vehicle is clean, well maintained, and compliant with company policies.
Safeguard and maintain all assigned tools.
Follow SFS’s Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous Communication Program, policies, and procedures; participate in weekly Toolbox talks; be familiar with all related safety documentation for each project.
Attend seminars to stay abreast of changing technology, installation, and testing approaches.
Train inspector trainees in all applicable aspects of fire protection.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education, Training & Certifications
High‑School Diploma or equivalent (required).
NICET and/or state‑required certification (required based on location; preferred).
Experience, Knowledge & Skill Requirements
3–5 years’ experience inspecting fire protection systems (required). 5+ years preferred.
Must be able to work alone and as part of a team.
Basic math skills, mechanical aptitude, problem‑solving skills, customer‑service skills, decision‑making skills, ability to multitask, meet project schedules, plan and organize, troubleshoot.
Ability to train others.
Must read, write, and communicate effectively in English with employees and customers.
Must operate a computer, tablet, and read electronic blueprints; experience with Salesforce and Microsoft Office is preferred.
Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Compliance with SFS’s Drug & Alcohol policy and background‑screening requirements.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job duties. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently bends, ascends and descends step‑stools, ladders and stairs, kneels, lifts up to 50 lbs, reaches above and below shoulders, and stands and walks for extended periods of time. The employee may also need to balance, crouch, drive, kneel, lift over 50 lbs, sit, stoop, twist, and work at heights. Visual and auditory requirements include color vision, close and far distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Occasional exposure to chemical, mechanical, uneven or slippery surfaces, electronic hazards, and loud noises is expected. The employee must consistently wear all appropriate personal protective equipment as required by company safety policies.
Work Environment Frequent local travel and occasional regional and non‑regional travel are required. Employees will work inside and outside in hot/cold temperatures and be exposed to loud noises, cramped quarters, dust, fumes, odors, hard surfaces, and electrical hazards frequently. Employees may also be exposed to chemicals, moving machinery, and uneven or slippery surfaces. All work requires consistent use of personal protective equipment as per company policies.
