Job Summary The Coding Specialist II is responsible for day‑to‑day tasks related to applying appropriate diagnostic codes to ancillary, recurring, emergency room, and walk‑in clinic encounters for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing while maintaining data integrity within the medical records and other facility systems, as well as the information exchanged between Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMHCS) and designated practice management facilities.
Required Qualifications
Certification by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Certified Coding Associate (CCA) – OR – certification by American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
Minimum of two (2) years of coding experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Hospital outpatient coding experience.
AHIMA Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Outpatient Coding Microcredential certification.
Strong interpersonal, customer service, verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact with different departments and practitioners.
Previous experience with Microsoft Office products, EHR software and Encoder systems.
Ability to perform clerical duties, repetitive and detailed tasks.
Ability to work independently, shift priorities, and demonstrate decision‑making ability.
Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, critical thinking, and understanding of healthcare documentation.
Mandatory Education High School Diploma, GED, or Certificate.
Preferred Education Associate’s Degree.
