Provider Coding Specialist- OB/GYN

– Full‑time, regular employee, day shift (8‑hour). Reports to the Coding Supervisor.
Brief Overview Under supervision, analyze and assign ICD‑10‑CM diagnostic codes, CPT, and HCPCS codes to professional surgical patient accounts, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulatory guidance, industry best practices, and organization policy.
Responsibilities
Analyze medical records, interpret documentation, and assign ICD‑10‑CM, CPT/HCPCS, and modifiers using designated software and reference materials.
Enter charges for procedures that are not soft coded as instructed for certain patient types.
Consistently meet coding quality and productivity standards set by the department.
Collaborate with Patient Financial Service (PFS) to review documentation; serve as expert on coding questions and assist with billing inquiries.
Gather and verify all information needed for clean claim submission, including special billing procedures per payer or contract.
Review and resolve clearinghouse rejections, denials, and charge review/claim edits daily, and process corrections for accounts returned from other departments.
Collaborate with the Compliance/Quality Team to address coding quality issues identified in internal or external reviews; implement quality recommendations.
Work with HIM operations to clarify queries and documentation needs; query providers for clarification on incomplete or ambiguous documentation.
Review and code orthopedic, OB/GYN, and other surgical specialty procedures with minimal supervision, ensuring correct coding and sequencing of diagnoses and procedures.
Provide continuous education and feedback to surgeons and clinical staff regarding ICD‑10 coding and documentation best practices for surgical procedures.
Education Qualifications
High School Diploma Required.
Experience Qualifications
2+ years of abstract coding for physician services Required.
Minimum of four years of healthcare experience, including at least three years of professional coding experience in Orthopedics or OB/GYN, Required.
Experience working remotely Preferred.
Skills And Abilities
Basic knowledge of ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding principles and guidelines.
Basic knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, surgical techniques, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, and metric systems.
Knowledge of Standards of Ethical Coding.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to maintain working relationships with physicians and staff, review work of others, and maintain confidentiality.
Proficiency with Microsoft Applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Strong analytical and organizational skills.
Self‑starter with ability to function independently.
Outstanding research skills and independent judgment to solve problems.
Ability to handle multiple priorities and collaborate to achieve common goals.
Expertise in assigning accurate CPT®, HCPCS Level II, and ICD‑10‑CM medical codes and modifiers based on payer guidelines.
Solid understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology for accurate coding of provider services and diagnoses.
Licenses and Certifications
Registered Health Information Administrator – AHA Required or
Registered Health Information Technician – AHA Required or
Certified Coding Specialist – AHA Required or
Certified Coding Specialist – Physician‑Based – AHA Required or
Certified Coding Associate – AHA Required.
