A Chiller Technician is a skilled professional responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing commercial and industrial chiller systems and associated equipment. They ensure efficient and safe operation of HVAC systems in commercial and industrial settings, combining strong technical skills, compliance adherence, and effective communication to deliver exceptional service. Minimum Requirements
Education: Completion of an electrical apprenticeship (8,000 hours) or a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Preferred certifications include HVAC or refrigeration trade school certification, state HVAC or refrigeration licenses, manufacturer‑specific training, and OSHA 30‑Hour Certification. Experience: Minimum 3–5 years as an HVAC technician with a focus on chiller systems, including hands‑on experience with WSHP, pumps, RTUs, and SWUDs, and commercial and industrial HVAC systems. Some positions require expertise in rebuilding centrifugal and/or screw chillers. Required: Ability to effectively communicate in the English language, both spoken and written. Travel: 50% Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6 am–6 pm. May vary based on customer demands and can include nights, weekends, and holidays. Key Responsibilities
Perform maintenance and repairs on various chiller types and refrigeration units, diagnosing issues with refrigeration circuits, compressors, evaporators, and condensers. Work on water source heat pumps, pumps, and rooftop units, overhaul equipment such as chiller tube bundles, heat exchangers, tower fans, gearboxes, and pumps, and install and repair pressure piping. Rebuild centrifugal chillers in accordance with EPA guidelines. Troubleshoot and diagnose issues involving mechanical and electrical malfunctions using diagnostic tools, interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical documents. Conduct system performance tests, collaborate with building automation systems (BAS) to monitor and optimize performance, and proactively identify and prevent potential issues. Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations including EPA guidelines, licensing requirements, and complete safety training. Interact professionally with customers to solve service issues, communicate effectively with clients and team members, and provide technical advice and guidance. Maintain accurate service records and complete required paperwork daily. Manage inventory and tools, ensuring availability of replacement components and maintaining company vehicles and their stock. Assist in training and supervising student workers and other mechanics, providing guidance and technical instruction. Leverage strong technical expertise in refrigeration cycles, control diagnostics, building automation systems, and reading technical documents. Apply knowledge of electrical theory and various chiller types and other HVAC equipment. Additional Job Description
