Duties
The assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) in the Civil Division will represent the United States in civil actions involving the U.S., serving as primary counsel in judicial proceedings such as hearings, oral arguments, and trials in district court and appeals. The role includes substantial legal research and writing at trial and appellate levels. Responsibilities will increase as training and experience advance.
Security Requirements
Initial appointment conditioned upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment subject to a favorable background investigation.
Residency Requirements
Generally must reside within the district or within 25 miles thereof.
Selective Service
Male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must certify registration or exemption.
Conditions of Employment
Must be a United States Citizen or National. Initial appointment conditioned upon satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication. Must be registered for Selective Service if applicable. J.D. degree and active membership in the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required. Must reside in the district or within 25 miles thereof.

J.D. degree, active bar member. At least 3 years post‑J.D. legal or other relevant experience. U.S. citizenship required. Preferred Qualifications:
Civil litigation experience, especially complex federal cases, depositions, and trials. Quick analytical ability, strong writing, research, interpersonal skills, and judgment. Excellent communication skills and ability to work professionally with attorneys, staff, and client agencies. Capacity to function with minimal guidance in demanding courtroom and trial settings.
Education
J.D. Degree required.
