Hanwha Qcells USA Corp (Qcells USA), headquartered in Irvine, CA, specializes in providing utility‑scale modules, solar photovoltaic (PV), and battery energy storage systems (BESS) project development, along with Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services for solar and BESS projects nationwide. The HV Engineer – Level 2 supports high‑voltage system design, substation layout development, and interconnection studies for utility‑scale solar and BESS projects. This role requires hands‑on experience in HV equipment selection, power system modeling, and compliance with NEC and IEEE standards. The Engineer will work closely with senior engineers to refine system designs, perform fault analysis, and ensure compliance with utility interconnection requirements. The position reports to the Director of SME or designated management and is based in Irvine, CA, with travel up to 30% expected.
Job Responsibilities
HV System Design & Grid Integration
Develop detailed HV substation designs, optimizing breaker configurations, bus layouts, and transformer siting.
Conduct power system studies, including load flow analysis, fault current calculations, and reactive power compensation.
Perform protection coordination studies, ensuring correct relay settings and fault isolation strategies.
Work with engineers to refine single‑line diagrams (SLDs), protection schematics, and interconnection compliance documentation.
Technical & Engineering Assistance
Support the selection of HV equipment, including transformers, breakers, disconnects, and relays.
Collaborate with permitting teams to ensure regulatory compliance and interconnection approval.
Assist in SCADA and substation automation system integration to support remote monitoring and control.
Project Coordination & Execution
Work with EPC teams to troubleshoot construction‑related HV design issues.
Assist in QA/QC verification of HV equipment installations and system commissioning.
Support utility interconnection applications, ensuring seamless grid integration for PV and BESS systems.
Continuous Learning & Development
Gain deeper expertise in grounding system design, high‑voltage switching operations, and arc flash studies.
Stay informed about ISO/RTO grid codes, interconnection tariffs, and advanced SCADA functionalities.
Regular attendance, in accordance with the company's attendance policy and supervisory assignment, is an essential job duty requirement.
Perform other duties and special projects, as assigned by Management.
Required Qualifications
2+ years of experience in HV system design, substation engineering, and grid interconnection studies.
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
Entry‑level experience with HV equipment design, substations, and interconnection.
Software Skills:
AutoCAD (Intermediate proficiency) ,
ETAP, EasyPower, or similar (Basic proficiency) .
Certifications: PE License or relevant grid certifications (Preferred).
Physical Demands
Stationary Position: frequently remains stationary up to 90% of the time and sitting up to 8 hours in a day.
Move/Traverse: infrequently bend, stand, stoop, and/or walk.
Carry Weight: infrequently carry weight and/or lift objects (light to heavy) up to 10 pounds.
Hearing and Speech: frequently communicates with the ability to hear and talk on a regular basis with employees, coworkers, and all personnel matters.
Sight: frequent use of sight to detect images on computer, office documents, and office objects near and far.
Climb: occasionally ascends/descends on stairway to get to office upper and lower floors.
Travel: up to 3% as needed.
Work Environment
Regular professional, office business setting.
Noise level ranges from low to moderate (if in office setting).
Noise level ranges from moderate to high (if on construction worksite).
Under the Office Mobilization Plan (OMP) policy, the role may transition to an onsite or hybrid arrangement, as determined by business needs and the Head of Department.
