Job Summary and Responsibilities
The Coder II is responsible for abstracting and assigning valid CPT, ICD‑9/10, and HCPCS codes to ensure appropriate reimbursement in accordance with federal, state, and private health plans as well as organization and regulatory guidance. The position is responsible for identifying compliance concerns, trends, and educational opportunities to ensure proper coding, documentation, and accuracy of billing within their areas of responsibility/specialty. The Coder II is able to work independently with limited oversight and may require direction from a supervisor or more senior co‑workers on complex cases.
Accurately abstract information from the service documentation and assign appropriate CPT, ICD‑9/10, and HCPCS codes into the appropriate billing systems, ensuring compliance with established guidelines.
Communicate professionally with providers, practice management, and other stakeholders verbally or in writing.
Work encounters in the coding work queue or task lists in a timely manner.
Meet or exceed organizational coding production and quality standards.
Understand and apply regulatory changes and stay current with coding updates, for example NCCI and MUE edits.
Identify trends and educational opportunities to ensure proper coding, documentation, and accuracy of billing.
Review and resolve denials.
Participate in special projects and complete other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements Education / Experience / Accreditation High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of two years of physician coding experience required.
License / Certification Previous Electronic Health Record experience preferred. Coding certification through American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist Physician Based (CCS‑P), or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required.
