Job Description Overall Purpose and Objective of Position

The primary purpose of the job is the management of plant utilities, including steam boilers, air compressors, nitrogen generators, wells, and fire systems. The Utilities Supervisor also manages the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and is responsible for maintaining appropriate chemical raw material inventories for the boiler/WWTP.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

Manages daily performance of the Boiler and WWTP team to achieve or exceed company objectives.

Keeps track of Boiler, and WWTP supplies and chemicals and places requisitions as required.

Encourage team participation in maintaining a clean and organized workspace. Provide an injury-free work environment for employees, staff, contractors, visitors through engagement, JHAs, training programs, good manufacturing practices, LDC standards/policies, and proactive elimination of exposures. Maintain and improve housekeeping in all areas. Implement and maintain 5S practices in the workplace. Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with 5S standards.

Is an active member of the facility SHE Program. Promote a safe and healthy work environment. Continually improve safety record by addressing both physical safety issues and employee safety attitudes. Enforce safety protocols and procedures. Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments. Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to areas of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to.

Completes regular checks of WWTP and Utilities staff and equipment to ensure that standard operating procedures are followed, and company standards are met. Promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Ensures employees are provided necessary training. Ensure team members are skilled in maintenance tasks. Promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Train team members on basic maintenance tasks. Ensure regular cleaning, inspection, and lubrication of equipment. Encourage team ownership of equipment maintenance (Autonomous Maintenance).

Makes improvements to the WWTP and Utilities processes as necessary to maximize efficiency, increase product quality, and lower costs. Facilitate team meetings to brainstorm and implement improvement ideas. Monitor progress and measure the impact of improvement initiatives.

Manages engineering projects effectively. Involve team in the selection and installation of new equipment. Provide feedback on equipment performance and maintenance needs. Ensure new equipment is designed for easy maintenance and operation.

Responds to WWTP and Utilities issues or alarms and leads investigations as necessary.

Collects, records and analyzes WWTP and Utilities data to optimize efficiencies and product quality

Serves as the Management Representative for the BQ9000 Quality program.

Notifies the Refinery Manager of potential safety hazards, equipment failures, operational inconsistencies and process/employee incidents.

Reports any WWTP/Utilities equipment issues to maintenance staff. Participate in develop and oversee a preventive maintenance schedule within area. Coordinate with maintenance technicians for planned maintenance activities. Ensure minimal disruption to production during maintenance.

Additional Responsibilities

Delivers job-related training to WWTP and Utilities staff to increase efficiency and safety

Coaches staff on the company’s performance expectations and provides ongoing performance feedback

Accepts and carries out other duties as assigned.

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses

High school diploma or equivalent

Driver’s License

Preferred qualifications:

Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related field

Boiler License preferred

Experience

Three years of supervisory/management experience in an industrial setting

Proven track record of successfully implementing effective production processes

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

General knowledge of continuous processing operations

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software, (e.g., Excel and MS Word).

Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at extended heights; manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing; move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more which requires bending and lifting.

Preferred qualifications:

General knowledge of steam boiler, energy efficiency and related utility operations

Knowledge of maintenance task over boiler and its components (preventive/corrective)

Knowledge wastewater treatment operations

Knowledge of the regulatory requirements the facility operates under (e.g., OSHA, EPA, USDA)

Knowledge of ISO 9000 and BQ-9000

Equipment Used

Typical office equipment: personal computer, printers, and mobile

Production machinery and operating equipment used in boiler house, utilities, and wastewater operations

Working Conditions

Interior office work is in a typical climate‑controlled office environment. Frequent visits to industrial operations areas are necessary with exposure to variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions. Regular exposure to gases, vapors, dust, odors and flammable liquids. Occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high noise. Some stair climbing and heaving lifting is required. Work is sometimes above ground level. Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time‑sensitive projects or to respond to emergencies.

Employee Supervision

This position will supervise the Boiler and WWT Operators and has the authority to recommend hiring, firing, & discipline of employees as well as supervise, manage and assign direct work.

Approve time and monitor attendance within the tracking system.

Approve PTO in Workday for technicians and coordinate shift coverage.

Maintain good order and discipline according to LDC code of conduct and all LDC policies.

Decision Making/Accountability

Plans and controls the WWTP and Utilities processes for a soybean crushing extraction and refinery plant. Accountable for monitoring and maintaining appropriate chemical inventories for utilities and WWTP areas of the plant. Plans and allocates the work of plant operations personnel to meet facility needs and production goals. Investigates and resolves any process, equipment and personnel issues.

Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to. Ensures employees are provided required training for area and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work. Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and safe manner. Promptly reports unsafe working conditions to management and communicates potential hazards to affected employees. Promptly reports all incidents to management and conducts incident investigation as soon as practicable; no later than 24 hours from time of incident.

This position is a safety sensitive role and is subject to random drug testing.

Quality & Product Safety Responsibilities

Maintains good working knowledge of Quality and Product Safety policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to. Ensures employees are provided required training for area assigned, and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work. Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and product safe manner. Ensure unsafe product working conditions are remedied as soon as practicable.
