The Organization LAFLA is a nonprofit law firm that protects and advances the rights of the most underserved—leveling the playing field and ensuring that everyone can have access to the justice system. Celebrating 95 years of service to Los Angeles communities, LAFLA is the first and most experienced legal aid organization in Greater Los Angeles. LAFLA employs more than 200 people, including over 100 attorneys, who provide free services and resources on a broad range of civil legal issues that impact health, safety, and self‑sufficiency. Every year, LAFLA helps more than 100,000 people find their voice, regain control of their lives, and build a brighter future.
The Unhoused People’s Justice Project The UPJP works alongside community organizations, unhoused residents, and tenants to fight against the criminalization of homelessness and poverty. The attorney will work with the team, co‑counsel, and community members to develop and advance movement‑driven solutions that advance housing justice and end criminalization.
Qualifications
1–6 years of experience
Active membership in the California State Bar
Litigation experience in state and/or federal court
Public policy advocacy and/or community lawyering experience is a plus
Excellent written and verbal communication
Experience working with unhoused persons helpful
Experience with a diverse client population and a commitment to promoting anti‑racism
Ability to manage a diversity of tasks and multiple active cases simultaneously
Willingness to work beyond a minimum 7.5‑hour workday, including evenings and weekends, and workweeks exceeding 37 hours when necessary
Examples of Duties
Work on a litigation team to complete tasks, including drafting and responding to discovery, document review, and document management
Fact investigation and case development, including interviewing witnesses, reviewing documentation, and drafting declarations
Legal research
Assist with preparation of motions, pleadings, and court documents
Participate in coalition work to achieve policy goals
Work on policy issues related to homelessness and criminalization
Provide direct representation to individual clients, including advice, counsel, and representation in administrative proceedings
Assist with development of “know your rights” materials and provide community trainings
Other duties as assigned
