Job Summary
Under direction, leads, oversees, and participates in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for receiving, evaluating, prioritizing, and relaying calls for emergency and non-emergency public safety assistance. Dispatches appropriate units and coordinates response of emergency and non-emergency personnel. Operates radio, telephone, computer programs, smoke and weather alarms, personal emergency response systems, and computer‑aided dispatch systems. Performs specialized clerical duties linked to preparation, maintenance, and release of materials related to public safety dispatch activities and technical/administrative tasks as assigned. Supports the Village’s mission, values, and service/hospitality (PRIDE) expectations and completes required training hours.
Essential Job Functions
Dispatch drivers for John Knox Village resident transportation.
Dispatch public safety officers and ambulances for emergency needs.
Answer incoming phone calls to serve residents and associates.
Knowledge and monitoring of Simplex system, security monitors, paging systems and 2‑way radio systems, notifyer system (fire alarm and severe weather system), and emergency call‑in procedures.
Knowledge of the Village’s complex geography and the greater Kansas City metro area.
Participate in the interview and selection process of dispatch associates.
Train dispatch associates and provide input into annual reviews.
Prepare QA/AI reports.
Apply spatial, motor, clerical, and eye/hand coordination aptitudes.
Exhibit leadership qualities, be self‑organized, multi‑task, prioritize information, and possess problem‑solving, persuasiveness, speaking, initiative, alertness, memory, concentration, judgment, patience, and excellent customer service skills.
Withstand phone and alarm noises; answer, dispatch, review, and follow up on all calls for HFL.
Maintain accurate data entry and dispatch call codes, spreadsheets regarding call types, equipment issued and other HFL information.
Read, analyze, and interpret general business, professional, technical, and governmental documents.
Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Compute rates, ratios, percents, and interpret bar graphs.
Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Maintain a positive public‑relations image.
Be available on nights and weekends and subject to emergency call‑in.
Adhere to all safety regulations and requirements.
Handle stress well and get along with others in the workplace and with customers outside the department.
Maintain acceptable standards of workplace conduct.
Requirements Education High school diploma or GED.
Licenses & Certifications
Emergency Dispatching (EMD) certification preferred.
Telecommunications Operator Certification, Emergency Dispatch (Medical, Fire or Police), and Telecommunications Instructor designations preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
Three years of dispatching experience preferred.
One year of personal emergency response system/alarm monitoring preferred.
One year of leadership experience required.
Intermediate level Microsoft Office skills (Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook) required.
Read, analyze, and interpret business and technical documents.
Speak before groups and write reports/business correspondence.
Compute rates, ratios, percents, draw bar graphs.
Define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions.
Maintain positive public‑relations image.
Perform basic algebra and geometry calculations.
Handle stress, get along with others, maintain acceptable conduct.
Adhere to safety regulations.
Interact with individuals with challenged mental capacities.
Available on nights and weekends; subject to emergency call‑in.
All associates may be called upon to assist other departments during declared emergencies.
Physical & Mental Demands
Sedentary work; occasionally lift up to 10 lbs, frequently or constantly move objects.
Stand and reach over 24 inches to trigger alarm systems 72 inches from the floor.
Stoop, bend, or kneel as necessary.
Close visual acuity required for preparing data, transcribing, viewing computer terminals, reading, inspecting small parts, using measurement devices, or assembling parts.
Good hearing to perceive sounds at normal speaking levels; receive detailed oral information.
Repeated wrist, hand, and finger movements.
Supervision Receives supervision from the Public Safety Supervisor. Gives work direction to dispatchers.
