Job Overview The Tunnel Foreman (Trenchless Division) will serve as a key on‑site leader responsible for the successful execution of specialized trenchless infrastructure projects, such as tunnel installations, vertical shaft construction, and pipeline rehabilitation. This role involves direct supervision over a crew, maintaining high standards of safety and quality control, and ensuring projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
Key Duties & Responsibilities Execution & Quality Control
Oversee and direct daily operations, including deep shaft excavation/installation, drill and shoot tunnels up to 12ft in diameter, TBM tunnels up to 7ft in diameter, and specialist pipeline rehabilitation (e.g., spiral wound PVC lining).
Read, understand, and accurately implement technical plans, boring profiles, and specifications for various trenchless applications.
Conduct regular inspection/verification checks to ensure all completed work meets necessary project requirements and tolerances.
Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve on‑site issues or potential problems related to ground conditions or equipment.
Crew & Safety Leadership
Supervise and lead a crew, ensuring members are properly trained, held accountable, and provided opportunities for growth in specialized trenchless methods.
Ensure all crew members and subcontractors adhere to OSHA and site‑specific safety standards.
Oversee the proper use and maintenance of specialized trenchless equipment (tunnel boring machines, jacking systems, lining equipment, etc.).
Project Coordination & Reporting
Effectively coordinate with the Superintendent to schedule and allocate resources and ensure tasks are completed on time and within budget.
Ensure the timely delivery, proper handling, and secure storage of all necessary materials and equipment.
Maintain accurate and timely crew member timesheets and daily logs/report of operational progress and equipment utilization.
Accurately track progress and document any issues or changes, including footages installed/excavated, ground conditions, and deviations in grade or alignment.
Qualifications
Minimum 3+ years of experience in specialized trenchless construction such as tunneling, deep shaft construction, and specialized lining rehabilitation.
Proven success in on‑site leadership and crew supervision within a trenchless and/or utility construction environment.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical plans, boring profiles, geotechnical reports, and project specifications.
Proficiency in operating specialized trenchless equipment, including jack leg drills, tunnel boring machines (TBM), explosives, and lining equipment.
Knowledge of underground sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and gravity/pressure pipeline system principles, techniques, and materials is a plus but not required.
Strong commitment to safety and quality.
Strong leadership, communication, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.
Ability to pass pre‑employment drug screening/physical.
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (MVR).
Ability to work out of town as required by project schedules.
OSHA 30 or other safety trainings/certifications preferred but not required.
Authorized to work in the US.
