Job Overview The Fire Safety Specialist provides technical assistance for the implementation of the Hospital’s Fire Protection Program across operations, training, maintenance, construction, engineering, inspection, and procurement. The role plans, coordinates and conducts fire safety training—including fire drills, in‑services, and employee orientation—in all hospital buildings, including off‑site locations. The specialist updates local and building fire safety plans, oversees Fire Safety, Above Ceiling Work Permits, Hot Work Permits, Interim Life Safety, and Fire Watch programs, leads training and evaluation of staff and vendors, audits ongoing programs and recommends changes, supplies input to Life Safety Sub Committee, prepares and maintains records on inspections and safety hazards, ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, monitors construction/renovation sites, responds to Fire Safety Alert alarms, and performs follow‑up inspections.

Key Responsibilities The following responsibilities are expected:

Provide technical assistance for implementing the Fire Protection Program.

Plan, coordinate, and conduct fire safety training and employee orientation.

Update local and building fire safety plans as needed.

Oversee Fire Safety, Above Ceiling Work Permits, Hot Work Permits, Interim Life Safety, and Fire Watch programs.

Train, evaluate, and direct staff and vendors in all fire safety programs.

Audit programs on an ongoing basis and recommend changes.

Provide input on Life Safety Sub Committee matters.

Prepare and maintain records related to inspections, prevention, and elimination of fire/safety hazards.

Maintain records of all fire department inspections.

Ensure compliance with applicable regulations (NYS-DOH, CMS, The Joint Commission, OSHA, FDNY, NFPA Life Safety Code).

Monitor construction/renovation sites for compliance with Interim Life Safety Measure program.

Respond to Fire Safety Alert alarm activations during normal business hours and off‑hours, including nights and weekends.

Conduct follow‑up inspections on fire alarm incidents/activations and serve as the contact individual for the local fire department.

Required Criteria

One year of experience in a healthcare environment or a fire‑protection‑related field.

Thorough knowledge of Joint Commission standards, NFPA standards, NYC Fire Department Directives, NYC fire and building codes, and OSHA regulations.

Strong computer skills and familiarity with word processing, database management, spreadsheet development, and cloud systems.

Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Criteria

Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or related field.

Fire Drill Conductor certification.

Fire Safety Director experience.

Salary Range $67,500 - $86,500 Annual

Location and Type Full‑time position located at NewYork‑Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center. On‑site presence required; employees should live within a commutable distance to NYP. NYP will not reimburse travel expenses.
