Facility EH&S Specialist – Altec – St. Joseph, MO
Altec is seeking a Facility Environmental Health & Safety Specialist to ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations, develop programs, policies, and procedures, and maintain a safe workplace.
Qualifications
Four-year bachelor’s degree (preferred) in an Environmental and Safety-related field (highly preferred). Alternatively, high school diploma plus four years of direct applicable experience in Environmental and Safety (Altec facility experience preferred).
Basic S & H Principles: understanding of regulatory standards (OSHA, DOT), OHSA 30‑hour training; hazard assessments (JHA/JSA); hazard recognition skills; problem‑solving abilities; root cause analysis (e.g., 5 Whys); continuous improvement at an individual level; operational knowledge; basic IH knowledge.
Minimum one year of experience in occupational safety and environmental regulations at a local, state, or federal agency (preferred).
Responsibilities
Conduct environmental and safety training and education programs, including safety equipment use.
Serve as Assistant Primary Emergency Response Coordinator and Assistant Spill Team Leader for HAZWOPER‑certified responders.
Maintain the MSDS database and coordinate maintenance of spill response equipment and countermeasures.
Coordinate “right‑to‑know” programs regarding hazardous chemicals and manage the Hazardous Waste Program.
Act as the primary contact with EPA and OSHA regulatory agencies.
Participate in accident investigations and Job Safety Analysis (JSA’s).
Maintain all environmental and safety governmental records; administer Altec APSMS system and ACMIS MSDS records for the facility.
Manage DOT drug testing and environmental and safety compliance events, including Workers Compensation RCI events.
Provide orientation and training for new associates.
Develop and maintain industrial hygiene programs such as noise surveys, continuous atmosphere monitoring, and ventilation surveys; develop medical monitoring programs for associates.
Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations.
File regulatory reports for EPA and OSHA compliance.
Inspect specified areas to ensure the presence of fire prevention equipment, safety equipment, and first‑aid supplies.
Investigate accidents to identify causes and determine prevention measures.
Investigate health‑related complaints and inspect facilities to ensure compliance with public health legislation and regulations.
Maintain and update emergency response plans and procedures; maintain inventories of hazardous materials and wastes using waste‑tracking systems.
Order suspension of activities that pose potential exposure to workers’ health, safety, or environmental impact.
Provide new‑employee health and safety orientations and develop materials for these presentations.
Interface with Corporate Environmental Manager and Corporate Safety Manager regarding implementation of corporate programs.
