Role Overview The Process Safety Manager will lead the development and implementation of process safety systems in a battery recycling facility. This role ensures safe handling of lithium‑ion and other battery chemistries, mitigates risks of fire, explosion, and chemical exposure, and drives compliance with environmental and occupational safety regulations. The manager will be a key partner in protecting employees, the community, and the environment while supporting sustainable recycling operations.

Key Responsibilities

Process Safety Leadership

Establish and maintain process safety management (PSM) programs tailored to battery recycling operations.

Promote a proactive safety culture across plant operations, engineering, and maintenance teams.

Hazard Identification & Risk Management

Conduct hazard analyses (HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA) for processes involving battery dismantling, shredding, and chemical recovery.

Assess risks related to thermal runaway, fire, toxic gas release, and chemical spills.

Implement safeguards for handling flammable electrolytes, heavy metals, and corrosive materials.

Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

Ensure compliance with OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, NFPA fire codes, and local environmental regulations.

Maintain documentation for audits, inspections, and permitting requirements.

Incident Investigation & Emergency Preparedness

Lead root cause analyses of process incidents (e.g., fires, chemical releases).

Develop and test emergency response plans for battery‑related hazards.

Coordinate with local fire departments and environmental agencies.

Training & Awareness

Train employees on safe handling of lithium‑ion batteries, chemical hazards, and emergency response.

Build awareness of evolving industry standards and best practices.

Continuous Improvement

Monitor safety KPIs (incident rates, near misses, audit findings).

Drive improvements in facility design, ventilation systems, fire suppression, and PPE usage.

Stay current with innovations in battery recycling technologies and adapt safety practices accordingly.

Qualifications Required

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).

Experience: 3+ years in process safety, chemical manufacturing, or recycling industries; experience with lithium‑ion batteries strongly preferred.

Certifications: CSP, CCPS, or equivalent credentials desirable.

Deep knowledge of OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, and NFPA standards.

Expertise in hazard analysis methodologies (HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA).

Strong leadership, communication, and problem‑solving abilities.

Travel: 20%

Preferred

Familiarity with battery chemistries, recycling processes, and associated hazards.

Worksite Conditions

Based at battery recycling plant sites.

Exposure to industrial environments with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards.

Collaboration with operations, engineering, EHS, and regulatory agencies.
