The Mobile Crisis Peer Support Specialist is an essential member of a multidisciplinary mobile crisis response team, providing voluntary, non-clinical peer support to individuals experiencing mental health, substance use, or co-occurring crises in community settings. The role is grounded in direct lived experience and emphasizes empathy, mutuality, advocacy, and respect for self-determination. Peer Support Specialists do not conduct clinical screening, assessment, diagnosis, or disposition decisions; instead, they offer emotional support, shared understanding, and system navigation while working alongside clinicians and emergency responders who retain responsibility for all clinical and legal decision‑making. Key Responsibilities
Provide non‑clinical peer support through active listening, empathy, validation, and shared understanding grounded in lived experience. Offer a supportive and calming presence during mobile crisis responses in homes and community settings. Use intentional self‑disclosure, when appropriate, to foster trust, hope, and connection. Support individuals in understanding their rights within crisis response systems. Advocate for individuals’ expressed preferences and choices during interactions with systems and providers. Assist individuals in identifying and accessing community-based resources, natural supports, and follow‑up services. Support warm handoffs and continuity of care in collaboration with the mobile crisis team. Provide follow‑up peer support, in person or remotely, as appropriate. Document peer support services using agency‑approved peer documentation tools. Participate in team meetings, debriefs, training, and reflective supervision.
