General Description The Inspector I-II shall be qualified and capable of performing inspections and other related duties to ensure compliance with current county codes and regulations. Under the direct supervision of the Operations Director or designee.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Inspect buildings during construction to ensure compliance with the building code, other applicable requirements and approved plans and specifications.

Investigate complaints and make inspections of existing buildings to determine if hazardous or unsafe conditions exist relating to structures and their use.

Inspect new and existing on‑site wastewater systems.

Inspect new and existing driveways.

Assist and advise the general public in matters relating to construction and code requirements.

Process permit applications.

Review plans and specifications for construction projects to ensure compliance with codes and other applicable regulations.

Inspect complaints regarding nuisances, land use, and ordinance(s) violations.

Prepare written reports, issue notices to correct code violations, issue “stop work” notices, testify in court regarding violations.

Assist owners, contractors, designers, architects and engineers on code and design requirements for any construction project.

Assist other inspectors on difficult or unusual code requirements for any construction project.

Prepare and maintain records and reports of plan‑checking procedures.

Prepare written reports, documentation and correspondences.

Obtain and track information in the county’s permit database, which may be accessed from the office or remotely.

Support team members and the overall goals of Development Services.

May be required to respond to emergency situations.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Post property for variance and conditional use requests.

Investigate and follow up on complaints regarding nuisances and land use violationsli>

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of materials and methods of construction.

Knowledge of the codes and legal application thereof.

Ability to read and objectively interpret code requirements in a knowledgeable manner, and to tactfully and effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with the general public while maintaining effective relationships.

Ability to independently recognize, evaluate and properly resolve unique problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.

Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.

Ability to maintain good records and prepare written reports.

Physically capable of safely moving about on construction work sites.

Skill in the safe and efficient operation of a motor vehicle.

Must pass a background check.

Certifications

Must obtain IRC building inspector certification within six months of employment.

Must obtain IBC building inspector certification within one year of employment.

Must obtain a National Waste Water Treatment (NAWT) or other certification in wastewater system inspection.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

Majority of the time is spent in the field doing inspections, traveling on improved and unimproved roads.

May require occasional changing of a flat tire, removing a vehicle from mud or snow, climbing stairs, crawling under floors, walking on a roof, using ladders.

Office work is done in a noisy, busy environment with a great deal of time spent on the telephone.

Requires frequent exposure to cold, heights, noise, driving, standing, sitting, walking, bending, repetitive movements.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED

Valid Colorado driver’s license

Must pass background check

Two to three years of experience in a trade or profession directly associated with construction practices (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical). Inspection experience or related technical education may substitute.

IBC Building Inspector Certification within one year of employment.

National Association of Wastewater Technicians (NAWT) Certification (or equivalent) in wastewater system inspection within one year.

Additional preferred specialized certifications including but not limited to fire, stormwater, plumbing, electrical.
