Reporting directly to the Dean, the Executive Associate Dean (EAD) works with the senior leadership team to accomplish the mission of UTCVM. In collaboration with the Budget Director and Dean, the EAD will manage the college’s budget for facility operations, the veterinary medical center, and diagnostic laboratories. The EAD will oversee strategic program implementation and capital projects, represent the Dean at various events, and serve as an excellent multitasker, problem solver, dispute mediator, and proactive issue resolver.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management:
Direct the operations of the CVM, including the Veterinary Medical Center and Diagnostic Laboratories; coordinate with directors of the Small Animal and Large Animal Hospitals, Pharmacy, Nursing, Central Supply, Central Sterilization, Facilities, Maintenance, and Computer Operations to manage facilities, staff, programs, budgets, and capital projects; ensure operations support the teaching mission and meet accreditation, state, and federal requirements.
Budget Management:
Work with the Budget Director and Dean to develop annual fiscal budgets; direct and monitor expenditures and revenues; oversee the general operating budget for facilities and operations; recommend resource allocation to the Dean.
Strategic Planning and Implementation:
Collaborate with the senior leadership team and the college community to facilitate implementation of the strategic vision; evaluate and report on implementation status and outcome metrics to the executive committee.
Faculty Affairs:
Assist the Dean and department heads with faculty recruitment, evaluation, accountability, and workload coordination; advise on faculty service in business units during promotion and tenure processes.
External Relations:
Represent the Dean at conferences, meetings with external stakeholders, and community events when the Dean is unavailable.
Data Analysis and Reporting:
Collate and analyze data to inform decision‑making; provide regular reports to the Dean on key performance indicators; ensure timely and accurate reporting required by campus, state, and federal constituencies; maintain compliance with accreditation and licensing bodies.
Communications:
Coordinate with the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications, Client Services, Referral Services, and Advancement Team on internal and external communications.
Other Projects:
Perform other projects and related functions as needed or assigned.
Key Skills
Proven ability to lead and manage teams, make informed decisions, and build consensus among faculty and staff.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact with diverse stakeholders.
Knowledge of budget management principles and ability to analyze financial data for strategic decisions.
Proactive identification of impactful information and elevation of issues to the Dean with resolution options.
Skill in managing the flow of issues, projects, and obstacles under supervision.
Strong organizational and interpersonal savvy, with emotional intelligence to represent the Dean’s position to internal and external constituencies.
Evidence of supporting high academic and professional standards throughout all programs.
Skilled at maintaining an atmosphere of teamwork, respect, professionalism, and integrity with staff, faculty, and students.
Ability to establish and implement short and long‑range organizational goals, policies, and operating procedures; monitor and evaluate programmatic and operational effectiveness and implement needed changes.
Qualifications
Master’s or Doctorate in Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or similar, required; DVM/VMD preferred.
Certified Veterinary Practice Manager or equivalent demonstration of expertise in financial management within complex operations.
Typically 10+ years of experience in academic veterinary medical center management or related field.
Administrative experience as department chair, associate dean, military officer administration, or managerial position within the veterinary field.
Outstanding organizational and communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously.
Working knowledge of the AVMA Committee on Accreditation process.
