Modern Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTSI) is seeking a
Systems Engineer
to join our team at Kirtland Air Force Base, NM, to support execution of the Space Systems and Hardware Integration for Novel Space Experiments (SSHINE) program supporting Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL)/Integrated Experiments and Evaluation Division (RVE), Rapid Architecture Prototyping and Integration Development (RAPID) Branch (RVEX). This position requires a strong understanding of space requirements, testing, and operational environment. The candidate will support the AFRL RAPID mission in order to drive data‑informed decisions at speed, maximizing the Service’s flexibility and efficiency in delivering space‑based capabilities for the Joint Force and the nation. A successful candidate is a self‑starting proven leader and problem solver with the ability to deliver superior results as part of a high‑profile, fast‑paced environment, and who has excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams.
Key Responsibilities
Assisting in development of Systems Engineering Plan and other systems engineering documents for the RAPID mission
Providing systems engineering support to RVEX, including mission, architecture and system performance analysis; requirement management, verification, and validation
Providing system integration support, trade study analysis, configuration management, deficiency reporting tracking, risk management, and interface control management
Providing RVEX engineering support, including contractor performance tracking, milestone planning, briefing preparation, staff coordination, and decision document preparation
Advocating for RVEX; developing and documenting program changes, plans, and/or processes
Assisting in RAPID technical reviews, processes, and criteria
Supporting efforts across multiple RAPID sub‑teams in the areas of Systems Engineering, Test Planning and Execution, Validation and Verification (V&V), and Pre/Post‑Mission Analysis
Conducting program and mission risk analysis and development of risk mitigation plans
Prepare decision‑quality materials such as briefings and supporting documentation (white papers, fact sheets, status reports, progress reports, and information papers) for senior‑level reviews and mission milestone decision meetings
Coordinating and supporting briefings, technical interchange meetings, working groups, and scheduling meetings to ensure RAPID team success
Working in small, targeted teams to identify emerging capabilities, organize studies and concept development, rapidly prototype and deliver advanced capabilities to the USSF
Meeting with third‑party technology vendors and evaluating performers from the solicitation and proposal process through technology delivery in support of sponsor RAPID requirements
Communicating highly technical problems and solutions from engineers to senior USSF and AFRL leadership
Working as a trusted, strategic partner with the customer by delivering actionable insights about emerging technologies as well as with technically‑minded external partners
Required Experience
5+ years of systems engineering experience on complex defense systems (communications systems preferred)
Experience with DoD space missions and programs
Knowledge of DoD Systems Engineering best policies, practices, procedures
Experience with duties or assignments specifically in support of engineering relevant to space programs
Ability to understand DoD/USSF systems engineering processes and documentation
Ability to understand working with military or DoD civilian clients and managing professional relationships
Education Requirements
Required Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM), Information Technology, computer science or similar from a regionally accredited institution
Desired: Master’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM), Information Technology, computer science or similar from a regionally accredited institution
Clearance Requirements
Active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility
Location & Travel
Full‑time, on site in vicinity of Albuquerque, NM and will require travel up to 25% of time within the continental United States. The candidate may travel to Government agencies and/or other contractor locations, as required, in support of design and test requirements reviews, briefings to industry, conferences and other meetings related to RAPID integration and test programs
