Diesel Mechanic – First Student, Hammond, IN
First Student is hiring a full‑time Diesel Mechanic for our new shop in Hammond, IN. This position plays an integral role in ensuring the safety of the children who rely on us for a ride to and from school in our classic yellow buses.

About First Student’s Mechanic Position At First Student, technicians perform maintenance to keep our fleet of newer vehicles safe for road travel and use their diagnostic skills to troubleshoot issues needing repair work. A typical day includes:
Performing maintenance on brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, & transmissions
Completing work orders
Assisting with mobile emergency services
Mechanics and technicians are subject to DOT drug testing as a safety‑sensitive employee. DOT Regulation 49‑CFR Part 40 does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including marijuana, for any reason.
Qualifications & Expectations
3+ years of experience working with automotive, diesel, electric, or CNG vehicles
Valid driver’s license and willingness to obtain a CDL (training provided)
Mechanic’s tool set
Motivation to grow, learn, and develop skills through ASE testing
Commitment to safety‑sensitive performance and DOT compliance
Preferred Candidate Profile
No college degree required
Military experience welcomed
Returning to the workforce
Seeking hourly (not flat‑rate) jobs
