Position Highlights

Monday - Friday

Full Time, 40 hours per week

First Shift, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM

Office/On-Site

Location: Old Saybrook, CT

The Role Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, performing highly skilled tree climber duties.

Job Requirements

The agency will conduct a practicum for the Transportation Maintainer 4 (Highly Skilled Tree Climber) position to evaluate and determine whether or not the applicant(s) has the skills and qualifications to perform the duties of this role. Certification in aerial bucket truck, safety-harness, and trauma strap through the Department is required prior to being eligible for interview and the skill evaluation practicum. Practicums shall be conducted pursuant to the DOT Administrative Guidelines for Conducting Practicums and will be part of the interview process.

Candidates must indicate that they hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with the "tank endorsement," in the "Licenses and Professional Certifications" section of the application, or they will not be considered. Applicants invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, reflecting the "tank endorsement," and valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at the time of interview, or they will be immediately disqualified.

Incumbents in this class will be required to have a 20-mile residency from the posted job location.

Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept emergency overtime duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed; mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.

Various storm events will require employees to stay at work for the duration of the storm, which at times could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends.

Candidates will be required to bring a copy of their Master Application at the time of interview.

Eligible candidates will be required to be interviewed, prior to being eligible for the skill evaluation practicum.

Candidates must show how they meet the required knowledge and experience on their application to proceed further in the hiring process.

Selection Plan In order to be considered for this job opening, you must be a current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service, absent any applicable collective bargaining language, and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening. You must specify your qualifications on your application.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Considerable knowledge of the construction, maintenance and repair techniques of roadways, roadsides, bridges or airports; the processes and materials used in the construction and maintenance of highway and bridges or airports.

Skills: interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills.

Considerable ability to operate skillfully and make ordinary repairs to highly complex mechanical equipment as listed on the attached addendum.

Ability to utilize computer software.

Minimum Qualifications - General Experience Three (3) years of experience in the construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadways, roadsides, bridges or airports, in work involving the operation and care of mechanical equipment or work in one of the recognized maintenance trades.

Minimum Qualifications - Special Experience One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in the operation of complex equipment or the performance of skilled tasks. NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Transportation Maintainer 3.

Minimum Qualifications - Substitutions Allowed Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of the subject requirements in one of the maintenance trades may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with climbing and cutting trees in the maintenance of highways and roadways

Experience leading a crew of employees engaged in highway maintenance, construction, or tree related duties

Experience planning and assigning maintenance operations and tree work to a crew of employees

Experience leading a crew of employees during snow and ice operations

Special Requirements

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal whenever their services are needed.

Physical Requirements

Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.

A physical examination may be required.

Working Conditions

Incumbents in this class are exposed to extremes of weather conditions, to frequent lifting of heavy weights, to highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, including exposure to heights when working on bridges, to poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months, and to loud and potentially dangerous machinery.

The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
