Plant Maintenance Mechanic I Hiring Department:

Utilities and Energy Management

Position:

Full‑time, Non‑Exempt, 40 hours per week, start immediately, expected to continue.

Location:

Austin, TX

Purpose:

To develop journey‑level skills through training on skilled work within the specific trade assignment. Responsible for learning skills in the operation, maintenance and repair of the trade assignment, and to perform such work to the limit of their experience.

Responsibilities

Assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing, steam, pump, and metering related utility systems.

Clean and maintain all equipment and work areas, and inform appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems or deficiencies.

Work in conjunction with trades or craft personnel to support systems within power plant, chilling stations, utility tunnels or other underground utilities.

Perform preventative or corrective maintenance tasks incidental to the operation of mechanical, tunnel and other plumbing related distribution systems in accordance with established procedures.

Maintain records of equipment repair and inventories, and may complete work orders using automated maintenance program systems.

Perform other related functions as assigned and attend staff meetings, safety training, and required job related training modules. Training certification required within 18 months.

Required Qualifications

Diploma (High School) or GED.

Two years of experience in skilled level repair and maintenance of electrical, industrial, mechanical or utility distribution equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

Good communication skills.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Commercial Driving License (CDL).

Ability to work well within a team environment.

Experience operating a backhoe, bobcat and other shop equipment.

Five years of experience in skilled water meter repairs and testing.

Five years of experience in skilled pump repairs and maintenance.

Experience troubleshooting basic electrical motor control components.

Driving Requirements This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. Submit a current three‑year driving record; if not a Texas resident, obtain a Texas driver's license within 30 days.

Salary Range $55,000

Working Conditions

Uniforms and/or personal protection equipment (furnished)

May work in all weather conditions, extreme temperatures, chemical fumes, and around electrical and mechanical hazards.

May work around standard office conditions and biohazards.

Environmental Demands

May work against heat, chemicals, heated surfaces, asbestos, electrical and explosive hazards, computer emissions, and biohazards.

Must use hearing, eye protection, gloves, suitable attire and breathing devices as required.

Physical Tasks

Use of a keyboard and personal computer.

Fine manual dexterity.

May be required to perform elevated work, work from ladders or scaffolds, lift up to 50 lbs, twist, grasp, push, pull and bend.

Additional Working Conditions

May be required to work in confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, and extended shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.

May be exposed to loud noise, high dust, allergen levels, and operate forklifts, personnel lifts and cranes.

May participate in on‑call program.

Work Shift Mon‑Fri 06:30 AM – 03:00 PM, 40 hours per week. Current schedule requires campus presence five days per week.
