The Position The Assistant Controller oversees all GAAP accounting activities across the company’s business entities while ensuring regulatory compliance and strong internal controls. This role leads and develops a team of accountants through coaching and mentoring, fostering clarity, accountability, and individual success. The Assistant Controller drives process improvements through people, systems, and the creation of internal SOPs. Additionally, this position may support the integration of newly acquired businesses. Primary responsibilities include Lead and develop a high-performing accounting team to deliver a timely, accurate GAAP close while fostering collaboration, accountability, and strong customer service. Drive continuous process improvement by identifying inefficiencies, reducing manual work, and evaluating new technologies to accelerate close and improve reporting quality. Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal controls, supporting the Corporate Controller with year-end audits and complex accounting matters. Apply strong financial acumen to interpret key financial indicators, identify risks or issues, and develop actionable solutions from analysis through execution. Optimize accounting workflows by managing complex information, exercising sound judgment, and operating independently with minimal supervision. Act as a proactive problem-solver and “financial detective,” anticipating challenges, presenting findings, and seeing initiatives through to completion. Build and energize effective teams by setting clear expectations, empowering decision-making, and maintaining high standards of integrity and urgency. Leverage technology and digital tools to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability across accounting operations. Qualifications and Candidate Background 7+ years’ experience in public or private accounting. Familiar with manufacturing and/or distribution preferred but not required. Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required. CPA is preferred but not required. Experience with ERP Software (e.g., Netsuite, SAP, Oracle, Epicor, etc.). Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Ability to convey ideas and thoughts with clarity, confidence, and respectfulness. Location This position is in Columbia, MO.
