Position Overview Our client (small family‑owned business) is seeking an experienced, hands‑on Interim Controller to support day‑to‑day accounting operations during a period of transition. This role requires someone who can quickly step in, manage core accounting functions, and ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance across payroll, accounts payable, and the general ledger. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in the details while also providing leadership and stability to the accounting function.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee and actively perform general ledger activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and month‑end close

Manage payroll processing, including review and approval, reconciliations, and coordination with third‑party payroll providers

Supervise and support accounts payable processes, ensuring timely and accurate invoice processing, coding, approvals, and payments

Review and maintain accounts receivable activity as needed, including reconciliations and aging review

Prepare and review monthly financial statements and supporting schedules

Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company accounting policies

Support cash management activities, including cash forecasting and bank reconciliations

Assist with audit preparation and respond to auditor requests

Identify process improvements and implement efficiencies within accounting operations

Partner with leadership to provide financial insights and support operational decision‑making

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including controller or senior accounting leadership roles

Demonstrated hands‑on experience with payroll, accounts payable, and general ledger functions

Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and month‑end close processes

Experience working in ERP systems and strong Excel skills – Sage Intacct experience is a plus

Ability to step into a fast‑paced environment and quickly assess and stabilize accounting operations

Strong attention to detail with the ability to meet tight deadlines

Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, team‑oriented mindset

Preferred Qualifications

CPA or CMA designation

Experience in interim, consulting, or transitional roles

Compensation Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco/Highspring depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual's skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, and can participate in medical, dental, and vision benefits as well as the company's 401(k) retirement plan.
