Salary: $26.43–$38.55 per hour; $55,186–$80,492 annually
Job Summary The Forestry Specialist Intermediate performs forest resource management work and administers one or two forestry sub‑programs at the Area level. The role supports field assignments across all Division programs and may lead teams of specialists, technicians, interns, and volunteers.
Responsibilities
Plan, implement, assign, and analyze Forestry Sub‑program tasks within the Area.
Complete annual sub‑program accomplishment reporting.
Collaborate with sub‑program and program staff at the Area, Region, and Statewide levels.
Visit forest stands, collect data, and apply forest management science to develop silviculture prescriptions that meet plan, wildlife habitat, and policy goals.
Administer active timber sales, provide corrective action to loggers, and scale cut forest products.
Develop and implement silviculture case studies to monitor short‑ and long‑term impacts of management activities on state forest lands.
Use GIS and 4Trees systems to input forest data, perform analysis, manage databases, and create maps.
Engage in wildfire prevention and suppression activities to minimize threats to life, property, and resources.
Serve as a Forest Officer to enforce fire and timber statutes.
Review and approve burner permit requests based on fire science principles.
Provide fire training to other foresters, emergency firefighters, and fire departments.
Meet with private forest landowners, share management recommendations, and approve cost‑share requests.
Participate in outreach events to promote sustainable forestry and wildfire prevention to community or school groups.
Operate various vehicles, equipment, and tools.
Perform site coordinator duties at assigned field stations.
Minimum Qualifications
Related forestry experience: 3 years (36 months) of field work using GIS, or
2 years (24 months) of field work plus 1 year (12 months) of program‑level leadership experience.
Associate’s degree substitutes 6 months of field work; Bachelor’s degree substitutes 1 year.
Ability to earn National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) basic firefighter (FFT2) within 6 months of hire.
Planning skills sufficient to manage a forestry sub‑program.
Human relations skills to monitor work progress and resolve conflict.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of multi‑use forestry concepts.
Computer skills to keep records, analyze data, manage databases, and use applications such as Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint, Adobe, ArcGIS.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher in an accredited forestry program.
Leadership training (e.g., L‑280).
Experience in Division of Forestry programs such as Wildfire Prevention, Cooperative Forest Management, and others.
Qualified as an NWCG Fire Fighter Type 1, Incident Commander Type 5, Engine Operator, Tracked Vehicle Operator, or Basic Faller.
Current licensures or certificates related to pesticide applicator, forest officer, fire investigator, or certified blaster.
Knowledge of Division of Forestry policies and procedures.
Completion of the Division’s training program for forestry technicians and specialists.
Additional Requirements
Unrestricted Class D driver’s license.
Ability to meet physical requirements and work in environmental conditions of the position.
Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsoring visa.
