Responsibilities

1. Patient Throughput – Obtain patient census and throughput information, collaborate with leadership and departments, and triage and prioritize outbound medical transportation.

1.1 Obtain pertinent patient demographics, medical history, and transportation needs.

1.2 Conduct a needs assessment to inform transportation prioritization.

1.3 Triage YNHHS ambulance resource requests and prioritize as appropriate.

1.4 Communicate plans and dispatch according to determined workflows.

1.5 Work collaboratively with all YNHHS sites and transportation vendors.

1.6 Familiar with medical transport contract agreements.

1.7 Know policies and procedures of pediatric and adult transport teams.

1.8 Respond promptly to requests or changes in transportation status.

1.9 Increase bed capacity by identifying barriers in the discharge process.

1.10 Identify areas of opportunity for process improvement and better utilization of medical transport resources.

2. Customer Service – Develop effective relationships with Bed Management, Emergency Department, support staff and ambulance vendors, and communicate clearly and concisely.

2.1 Communicate accurately and appropriately to all stakeholders.

2.2 Incorporate stakeholder input into decision algorithm.

2.3 Follow departmental guidelines and initiate service recovery when needed.

2.4 Report opportunities for improved communication and relations with ambulance vendors.

3. Ambulance Dispatch – Obtain appropriate patient information and dispatch YNHHS ambulance resources.

3.1 Obtain patient demographics, medical history, location and destination.

3.2 Communicate effectively with ambulance resources to maximize capacity.

3.3 Identify areas for improvement and growth of system ambulance resource.

3.4 Document and maintain information on volume and related details.

4. Resource Management – Maintain knowledge of Epic, StatCall, and Connecticut geography; multitask and integrate information.

4.1 Maintain working knowledge of all applicable computer systems and dispatch equipment.

4.2 Demonstrate strong multitasking using multiple computer systems.

4.3 Interpret and integrate dynamic information and problem‑solve.

4.4 Direct ambulance resources safely and efficiently.

4.5 Document accurate records for patient care, process improvement, and program development.

5. Support Organizational and Departmental Goals – Participate in workgroups, team building, and training.

5.1 Attend staff meetings, workgroups, and conferences.

5.2 Collaborate in departmental growth activities.

5.3 Participate in onboarding and training of new employees.

Qualifications

Education – High school diploma or GED required.

Experience – Minimum of two (2) years as an EMT or paramedic, or two (2) years of dispatch experience.

Licensure – Active EMT/paramedic certification or International Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch certification obtained within one year; State of Connecticut Telecommunications Certification obtained within one year.

Special Skills – Ability to direct and triage in a highly fluid dynamic environment; demonstrate multiple priorities and critical thinking; collaborate with all layers of management and vendors.
