Field Specialist in Business Development – St. Louis, MO
University of Missouri (MU) Office of Extension and Engagement – MU Extension Business and Communities, St. Louis, Missouri. The position primarily serves as a business educator and technology commercialization specialist for technology-based programming in the I‑55 Corridor and beyond.
Mention: MU TITLE: Assistant/Associate/Full Extension Professional. The position is a 12‑month, ranked, non‑tenure track appointment at the rank of assistant, associate, or full Extension Professional, depending on qualifications. The working title will be Field Specialist in Business Development. The workload distribution is 90% Extension Teaching and 10% Traditional Service.
Specialist Emphasis This role focuses on commercialization, product development, finance, management, marketing, and growth management of technology‑led companies. It also serves as a liaison with local higher‑education institutions to facilitate student experiential learning across Missouri.
Core Duties of MU Extension Specialists
Design, conduct, and evaluate educational programs—both in person and online—to support Missouri's learners and clients.
Develop innovative, research‑informed educational products, services, and materials, including curricula, publications, and websites.
Engage learners, stakeholders, volunteers, and communities to solve local problems and foster partnerships with county extension councils and other agencies.
Professional Expectations
Identify educational needs across coverage counties and collaborate with partners to meet those needs.
Create an annual plan of work aligned with statewide program goals; provide monthly reports to county extension councils and supervisors.
Collaborate with campus‑based specialists on research projects and disseminate findings through workshops, courses, and publications.
Maintain competency in communication, educational programming, volunteer management, grant acquisition, and teamwork.
Provide timely, research‑based information during emergencies and represent MU on boards and committees.
Participate in professional development events to improve technical and leadership skills.
Other duties as assigned to support the mission of MU Extension.
Additional Expectations
Travel throughout Missouri and occasionally to out‑of‑state locations; responsible for maintaining a valid Missouri driver’s license and working vehicle, with reimbursement for approved travel expenses.
Attend events outside of regular business hours as required.
Research and develop programs for second‑stage businesses across the statewide BDP network.
Qualifications
Earned PhD or master’s degree at time of appointment in business, engineering, business education, or a related area with appropriate coursework.
Years of experience in business management, marketing, or finance; expertise in technology commercialization, government procurement, or related fields.
Demonstrated ability to apply and transfer research‑based knowledge to practice.
Successful experience operating or managing a business, consulting, or owning a business; sales, banking, or lending experience preferred.
Knowledge of financial analysis and communication of financial reports.
Experience with Lean Launchpad / I‑Corps curriculum and SBIR/STTR grants.
Understanding of government procurement, contracting, and necessary registrations (8A, SAM, etc.).
Effective and innovative teaching strategies, strong listening, written, and oral communication skills.
Experience designing, conducting, and evaluating educational programs in community cooperation, capacity assessment, and volunteerism.
Anticipated Hiring Range Minimum starting salary of $58,000.00, salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
